What's the best way to travel from Delhi to Amritsar to Dehradun...

I will have a few suitcases too......where can I put these, knowing the rain space is limited

Depends on your budget. From Delhi to Amritsar you can take the nice Shatabdi train, which has a fair amount of luggage room. From Amritsar to Dehradun, I'm not too sure, though it is always possible to hire someone to just drive you there.

So, here you have to travel from Amritsar to Jallandhar Cantt - either by road or by a connecting AND again by road or connecting train from Haridwar to Dehradun.

Though there are three daily trains to Laksra Junction, two of them have inconvenient arrival time in Laksar Junction and One is FULLY UNRESERVED TRAIN.

The 5210 Janseva Express (fully Unreserved) departs from Amritsar at 6.30 hrs. and arrives in Laksar at 13.45 hrs. Perhaps, you can carry your suitcases in this train but perhaps you may have to take the help of a Railway Porter to put them in the Train.

As Sadhu suggests, the Shatabdi is probibly the best option from Delhi to Amritsar, there are 2 daily Shatabdi's on this route...(I will give details of trains in both directions as the info may be useful to others)

Delhi - Amritsar

Train 2029 (2031 on wednesdays) departs New Delhi daily at 07:20 and gets to Amritsar at 13:10.

I booked tickets from Amritsar to Haridwar in early January 2010 and my options were First Class or 3rd A/C - here are my questions.
Is this First Class really terrible? Are there open windows in the berth? I assume it is going to be really cold so I want to know as much as I can about this. Is bedding and blanket provided in First Class? Should I rebook in 3rd A/C for a more comfortable experience? This is for two woman, mother and daughter traveling alone. Please help!!!

Wow, difficult one, the space, comfort and security of First Class (non AC) against the warmth of 3 tier AC.

I guess is depends on you and how important security is to you.

3A is completely safe, but it is a carriage with 64 berths, and is an open carriage (instead of lockable cabins).

FC has 4 berth cabins and 2 berth coupes, and both are lockable.

In theory (I've never tried this) you can pay (Rs30 I think) for a 'bed roll', you get sheets and blankets, but if these are the same as those provided (free) for 3A passengers, I doubt they'd be enough, but surely they'd provide enough????

There are closable windows in FC, but it will still be a bit cold, so the blankets are definitely needed.

FC is a real treat, and is also rare in the north and should be experienced if you get the chance, but the temperature in 3A is perfect, so it really comes down to how you feel about security.

Whatever you choose, Amritsar and Haridwar/Rishikesh are really wonderful experiences, if you arrive late afternoon, have a quick visit to the Golden Temple, then the border ceremony, then have the rest of the next day for a couple more visits to the GT and a few other things, then the overnight train, that time will be enough in Amritsar, however, Haridwar/Rishikesh (Both are great) need a lot longer, 4-5 days minimum.

I just want to add a little bit....

The Amritsar - Haridwar train which has FC & III AC is Amritsar - Dehradun Express. This is a low priority train and is quite slow, it stops at a lot of stations enroute......and it gets to delayed very often. In January, there will be heavy fog at Amritsar and I am sure it will be delayed (Very usual for this train) another issue is that it's compartments are old, so you may find the glass in FC broken or a window not properly closable, which means cold air in the compartment.

In my opinion if you are on this train, then III AC is better.....

This train is still popularly known as Lahori Express as in pre Pakistan days it used to run between Dehradun & Lahore....
