Delhi Metro Stations
Delhi Metro Stations
I just saw some photos on Wikipedia and couldn't believe how high-tech some of the train stations look in the Delhi Metro system. Is this all the stations or just a handful? I can't wait to ride them when I go back to Delhi in a couple of months. Last time I was in Delhi in February 2004, they were still constructing these places. The station in the picture on the Delhi Wikipage looks like those stations at the Sydney Airport Underground train stations.

The New Delhi Metro network and infrastructure are superb.
All the stations are new.The garden at Connaught Circus has been hollowed out and a superb air conditioned station of concrete, glass and steel built.Everything is new and squeaky clean.
The rolling stock is modern and A/C,the carriages aren't separated so it's easy to walk through and find a seat.
Fares are reasonable by Indian standards -idiotically cheap by Western standards. All ticketing is electronic-either tokens ar smartcards
Currently, there's not a connection to the airport and given that everyone and his baggage is searched on entry ,I don't think it would be practical.
More info and pics and links available on UrbanRail,an excellent resource for those interested in metro systems in foreign parts

How cheap? maximum ticket is for Rs 18 i guess
Wow! That is bloody cheap! That's like AU55 cents for maximum price!
You can buy a monthly coupon too which reduces the average fare by about 20%
Huge shopping malls have also come up at a few stations complete with food courts.
The service to the University area north of Delhi has come as a big relief to hundreds of students.

Maximum fare for a single journey is Rs22.The fare chart can be found here http://www.delhimetrorail.com/commut...tro_fares.html
also maps and additional information.
There are one/three day 'tourist cards' available at Rs75/200 -somewhat overpriced.I used the Rs200 stored value smartcard when I was in Delhi earlier this year.Remaining credit is shown after each use so it's easy juat to add another Rs100 credit as required.

I can't wait to ride the system and I am looking forward to the extension to Noida. The Metro was built with a fair amount of foreign help (Korean, Japanese?) and copied after some of the other modern Metro systems like the one in Rome and Washington DC. Everything is standardized, the trains, stations, fares, etc. to keep things simple and efficient. My only concern is that eventually the system will be poorly maintained and then trashed by the riders.
