DEL - MUM - KOL - DEL hopeless??

del to mum - any day before the 25th of may
mum to kol - 9th or 10th of june
kol - del - 17th or 18th of june

I have been trying for weeks to book trains, but am a little miffed. I finally made a real booking for mumbai for the 18th on mum radjani with tatkal, waitlisted at number seventeen posted on the confirmation thread and basically was told, not a snowballs chance. So I supose I will wait for the

So I guess I am back to square one. I am now looking at NZM BCT RAJ SPL for the 21st, next thursday. I go through the process from it showing available to WL/4 when I try to make the payment. I think I may head to the station tomorrow, but am I fooling myself. At this stage am i going to have to spend the 15k on airfare?

I think Steven mentioned there are vacant seats in Foreign Tourist quota in same train which you can book at New Delhi Railway Sation and subsequently cancel the Tatkal Ticket.

Are you Indian?

The Foreign Tourist Quota is really useful on those long routes and particularly on the Rajdhani trains, there is often FTQ availability a few days before the train is due to depart, mainly because foreign tourists don't take these long journeys.

THEN book on the Foreign Tourist Quota.

Forget Tatkal, just pretend you do not have a ticket, after all, you've got no realistic chance of that ticket becoming confirmed, so take Tatkal thoughts out of your head.

So now, you're in a position where you need a ticket to get to Mumbai, and you want this ticket for a train on Monday.

Go to the Tourist Reservation Centre on the first floor of New Delhi station, it's above the main entrance hall, don't listen to anyone who tries to lead you to anywhere else.

Book a Foreign Tourist Quota ticket on train 2952 (New Delhi 16:30, Mumbai Central 08.35)

There is still availability in 2A and 3A on the Foreign Tourist Quota.

Once you have that confirmed ticket in your hand, cancel the Tatkal ticket.

ok I was under the wrong impression that tatkal = foreign tourist quota scheme. Ok i will do as you say tomorrow (sunday) morning.

I am assuming I should follow this same model when I arrive in Mumbai station to buy my ticket for kolkata and then in Kolkata for the tran back to delhi yes?

Thanks!

No, Tatkal is a last minute quota.

Now that the missunderstanding is out of the way, go back and read my posts in this thread.

You should try to book all your tickets tomorow if you can find availability for your dates using the Foreign Tourist Quota.

When you go to book your tickets, you need to take your passport, and pay in foreign currency, if you can't pay in foreign currency, you'll need an encashment certificate (given when you exchange currency) or an ATM receipt.

Normal prices for the Foreign Tourist Quota, but as you'll be using a couple of Rajdhanis (more expesive for all, but meals included), Rs6000 should be close to the cost of all 3 tickets in 2A.

The ATM receipt doesn't have to be for the amount of the tickets, If in the last few weeks you've got Rs10,000 out of an ATM, use that receipt.

That's great news.

How many people tried to lead you in in different directions on your approach to New Delhi station?
