Day Train Agra-Kota

I have searched the travel threads and have found reference for trains from Agra to Kota/Bundi or Mathura to Kota/Bundi but all trains quoted leave late at night or very early in the morning eg 1.30am.

Is there a train from Agra or a place nearby to Kota during the day?

This is what we want to do:

Depart Delhi by car and driver for Agra on Sunday 11 November - via Fatehpur Siki - visit Taj in the late afternoon - overnight in Agra and visit Taj early morning on Monday 12 November.

Depart Agra at say 9am for ??? railway station to catch a train to Kota.

I know there is a train from Bharatpur to Kota leaving at 10.50am and arriving in Kota at 2.30pm. If we catch this train it there enough time to drive from Agra to Bharatpur? Or will we have to leave Agra earlier, say 8am?

Train# 9040 Avadh Express departs Agra Fort (there are three railway stations in Agra) at 5:30 am reaches Kota Jn at 11am. The train runs on monday, wednesday and friday. Fare for this train is Rs606 for 2tieer a/c Rs437 for 3tier a/c and Rs166 for Sleeper class.

Thanks Epicure, but I was hoping for a train departing Agra after say 8am which will give us time to view the Taj at sunrise.

Do you know of any?

The other option for day journey is go to Mathura Jn and take train#2060 janshatabdi departs at 15:48 and arrives Kota Jn at 19:40. It has a/c chair car fare Rs360.

EDIT, Sorry, there were no replies when I started my reply.

If you stick with your plan, the following train is the one you'd use from Bharatpur to Kota: -

Train 2904 departs Bharatpur at 10:45 and gets to Kota at 14:30 (1A, 2A, 3A. (SL class cant be booked on this train for this short journey)

It's about 55kms from Agra to Bharatpur, if you got a taxi and departed Agra at 08:30, you'd get to Bharatpur with time to spare.


How important is the Taj at sunrise?

Here's what I'd do if I was on a tight schedule.....

I'd get the Shatabdi from Delhi....

Train 2002 departs New Delhi on the 11th at 06:15 and gets to Agra Cant station at 08:07 (EC, CC)

Then I'd put my bags into the cloakroom at the station (you'd need to keep your train ticket to do this) and go and visit what I wanted to see in Agra (with obvious time constraints), then pick up bags from station at about 15:00 and get a taxi to Fatehpur Sikri (journey time 1 hour) and spend the night in a hotel in Fatehpur Sikri.

Train 9040 departs Fatehpur Sikri at 06:18 and gets to Kota at 11:00 (2A, 3A, SL.)(this train calls at Lakheri* at 10:04)

*Kota is 36kms from Bundi, Lakheri is 60kms, both are connected by direct roads to Bundi and will have plenty of buses, I'd be tempted to get off at Lakheri, you'd get a chance to see a part of India that tourist don't visit, you could visit the cement works (optional ), but you wouldn't lose any time on your journey to Bundi.


Train 2904 starts from Amritsar and train 9040 starts from Bihar, there is a chance they could run late, you can telephone from Agra/Fatehpur Sikri and find out if they're running late, this could be useful. The telephone number is simple to remember - 139.

A great find Epicure, but I'd be a little worried about the connection, train 2189 starts it's journey in Jabalpur some 14 hours early, it could very easily be delayed by an hour or more.

Thanks Steven ber - lots of options. But it can be done, I think I will stick to the Bharatpur option for now.

Likewise, on Fridays & Saturday, you have 2942 and 2948 Expresses respectively, which depart from Agra Fort at 12.35 hrs. and get you to Kota at 17.55 hrs. But they come all the way from Asansol and Patna respectively and their destination is Ahmedabad.
