Dangerous 3 tier AC Berths

Beware the middle Berth has to to be hooked by a funny hook attached to the Upper Berth. If the middle berth is hit by the persons going on the Upper Berth the middle berth will go down crashing on the Lower Berth resulting on hitting the persons sleeping behind.

I saw this in front of my eyes and this time it hit a little 7 yrs old child who skull ruptured and was bleedling profusely. There was no Dr on the Train and no first aid box.A lady from overseas had her first aid kit who tied a Bandage until they received first help after two hrs on arrival at the station enroute.

From the officials of the train we figued out that this happens regularly
but no one complains so no change has been bought

Beware if you are Sleeping on the Lower Berth as the middle berth may come down Hitting on your face its a fearceful attack.

The Hooks suck that hold the Middle Berth

Best of luck

That must have been terrifying for the little girl and her family.

Those middle berths are heavy, the angle they would fall would almost guarantee that the metal outer rim would hit a person in the face, I would imagine an accident like that could prove fatal one day.

I've not heard of this kind of accident before.

I've always thought the hooks looked safe, if I remember right, there are 2 circular hooks that hang down from the top berth, they go completely around the clasps (and over the rim of the clasp) on the (raised) middle berth, then the weight of the person sleeping on the middle berth does the rest.

(I'm sure clast is the wrong word, it's a metal thing that sticks out from the outside of the middle berth.)

This accident reminds us all that it is best to double-check that the hooks are connected properly.

Yes and ALWAYS on a train check the luggage stuffed over your head. In December a hard-sided briefcase fell on my head and knocked me out, briefly. Luckily there was a group of doctors traveling in the carriage and they deemed me "quite all right". It hurt like hell and scared the poop out of me and I couldn't believe I wasn't bleeding. The knot lasted for days! I was not happy! I must have been pouting as the man beside me finally said: "Smile. God has saved you."

Thumbs up

if travelling single, opt for one of the upper berths.

if two, go for the window side upper and lower; or - one each of middle and lower in case of the threesome.

avoid middles as far as possible. apart from crashing down, the occupants of middles are 'na ghar ka na ghat ka' - like the middle classes of society, they are always at the mercy of either the the upper class or the lower class!!!!!

Never heard of this kind of accident before. I am sure that there was some fault in that hook or they have not fixed it properly . One should allways check the hook before using it.

Though I've never witnessed such an accident, I tend to agree with goamit.

The hook for securing the middle berth is indeed flimsy and dosen't inspire confidence in the person occupying the lower berth. One should ensure that it is properly and firmly affixed.

On a very recent travel by 3AC on the Mum-Del Rajdhani, I was occupying the lower berth and one of the two hooks did not completely fit into the slot provided under the middle berth. Needless to add, I spent a sleepless night but thank God there was no mishap !!
