Cross-Country by Train?
Is it feasible (I have to go in June) to fly into one major Indian city, cross the country to another city by train and then depart from a second city?
is there a popular or recommended rail journey in India? thanks! ![]() |

Yes, you can travel from one city to another by train, and you should be able to arrange your air ticket to allow you to fly in one port and out another. It's called an "open jaw" ticket.
What do you plan to do or see in India -- that should give you plenty of train journeys to think about. |

LP, you can take a regular railway from Delhi to Bangalore to Mysore. It's a long journey, so instead you can take a roundabout trip.
Try Delhi - Agra (Taj) Agra - jaipur - jodhpur - ajmer (Rajasthan) Then to Bombay Bombay - Mangalore in Konkan Rail (Nice scenery) Mangalore - Bangalore Bangalore - Mysore... Use this map (click on the map to enlarge) http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s...cat/500/page/1 Easily you can spend a month seeing a large part of India. Olso, near Mysore, you can take a train to sakleshpur (close to Belur Halebid), or to Hampi. |

Mama,
Konkan rail is a must do, if you want to travel by train. Hyderabad - Bombay is a very busy route, most trains run on time. Scenery is bad. Not much of greenery, dry wasteland. Also, most convenient is an overnight journey. I don't think there is any train that is not safe in south. If you plan to take up overnight train, you should do a reservation (Sleeper Class) which his a closed compartment. Daytime trains are reasonably crowded and are very safe. |
