I will be travelling on the Coromandel Express between Chennai and Kolkata with two break of journey stops at Vizag(Vishakapatnam) and Bhubaneshwar. I normaly travel 2AC but as the first leg is during the day I thought to go Sleeper Class. Can anyone tell me if I book the whole trip in SL can I upgade to 2AC when I restart my journey between Vizag(Vishakapatnam) and Bhubaneshwar. Or can I book part of the trip in 2AC and part in SL or will I need to book 2AC all the way to make sure I get a 2AC for sleeping. Thanks

This is my understanding.

1. If one is doing "break journey" then the entire journey has to be done in the same class of travel since it is really one ticket from origin to final destination.

2. If one one wants to break journey (really take stops along the way), and change class of travel in the different segments, then it is like individual tickets for each segment (where we have individual station origin and destination).

Steve and others may have better comments.

Cheers

First thing to remember, a 'break of journey' (BOJ) ticket can only be purchased at a counter in India and not on the Internet.

If you purchased a BOJ ticket with Sleeper Class reservations for all sections, you would be able to upgrade for any of the sections, however, there would need to be berths available in the higher class, and this is very unlikely on a train like the Coromandal Express as it's probably the most popular train on this route.

I also suspect the upgrade charge would be worked out on a ‘point to point’ basis, and without the benefit of telescopic rates.

I remember reading about someone booking a BOJ ticket using different classes for different sections (at the point of booking), but this was about 4 years ago, and they may have just been talking about booking the ticket, I may be wrong, hopefully VSP or Rangss can correct me if I'm wrong.

Two other things to remember: -

1, try to book side berths for daytime Sleeper Class travel, often in Sleeper class extra people board the train during the day, the inside berths have long seats for 3 people, but I've often saw 5 or 6 people on those seats, a side berth has a single window seat that will only sit one person, you.

2, Different trains can be booked for different sections of your trip, this is within the BOJ rules, so you could do all sections during the day, or overnight, or a mixture.

Coromandal Express

Thanks very much for the info. As it will be my first trip on getting to India I want to book the ticket/s on the net so will book 3 different journeys. May look at a day train between Vizag(Vishakapatnam) and Bhubaneshwar.

Or take the scenic morning train (about 07:00) from Vizag through the Araku valley and on till Korapur (about 14:00), a tribal area, then get an overnight train (about 20:00)from Koraput to Bhubaneshwar (about 08:00).

(I'll give train details later if needed, the above times are from an old memory))

Vizag

Main reason for going to Vizag is to do the train trip to the Araku valley .
Travelling on from there sounds like a great idea Steve, thanks.

I'm sure you already know the following, but just for others.....

Train 1VK departs Vishakhapatnam daily at 06:50 and gets to Koraput at 13:20.

FC = Rs 291
SL = Rs 84

Use the First Class (not air con), these carriages are becoming extremely rare and should be used at any and every opportunity.

Train 8448 departs Koraput daily at 18:25 and gets to Bhubaneshwar at 08:30.

2A = Rs 1024
3A = Rs 733
SL = Rs 271

Just out of interest, why Bhubaneshwar?

There is a train (8006) that departs Koraput at 07:45 daily and gets to Howrah (Calcutta) 24 hours later, it goes all round the houses, via Sambalpur and Jamshedpur.

It has 1A, 2A, 3A, and SL.

Bhubaneswar is a better place to alight than Khurda especially if you seek a hotel to rest/dump luggage.
...and I took the road less travelled.

From Khurda Rd Jn i'm assuming busses/ricks can be taken to Puri? Also, if one can go the way suggested from vizag to bhubaneswar, going back the same way must be an option too?
