Coonoor to Ooty
Hello
I am heading to India and really want to ride the toy train to Ooty as I hear good things about it. Unfortunately I don't have the time to ride it all the way from Metupalyam to Ooty but was trying to see if I could board it at Coonoor and ride it to Ooty for a half day? I cant seem to book any tickets for this on the train websites. Can anyone advise or help me as to whether this is possible and how I go about booking the tickets? thanks |

Toy Train Details
62 MTP UAM PASSR METUPALAIYAM 07:10 UDAGAMANDALAM 12:00 day time sitting and First class and ofcourse arrangements have to be made in advance if you'd like to charter the whole train from the UK.
It's not a bad idea to go and do the whole thing. If you're going from coonoor you might as well do the whole thing. And do visit wellington, the army regiment and the lovedale school. You will feel that you are in dear old blighty again! Munnar from Ooty will be a very beautiful road trip. I would imagine that you are taking the blue monutain or nilgiri train to join this one? The station codes are UAM for Udagamandalam the tamil name for Ooty , Station code for coonoor is ONR and Mettupalayam MTP from where the train begines the climb. You can book it in cleartrip or irctc. |

Thanks so much, I had no idea that Mettupalayam was actually that close to Coonoor. I must have been spelling it wrong and thought it was way over in Tiruchirapalli.
I've found the train times online but my dates are too far ahead and they dont take bookings so far out. So I'll have to wait a few weeks before I book. Thanks for the other tips to Munnar. I havent gotten that far in my itinerary yet. We were thinking of just hiring a car to drive us the rest of the way but I really did want to take this train ride. Thanks so much for your help, I was on completely the wrong track - you're a life saver. |

Toy train
It's a toy train, bookings might not open before a month of the ride. There's a train that can be caught from Erode[a railway town in the south] or Madras called the Blue Mountain express that will take you straight to the toy train. The toy train waits for this train.

Note that the steam loco is used only from Mettupalayam to Conoor, after which they use a bio-diesel loco as the gradients are not so high. Riding the steam engined train is magical in the dense forests.
