Concessions for Senior Citizens
Concessions for Senior Citizens
Calling all Rail Gurus....Hello everybody!!
In the last Railway Budget, Railway had extended a few additional benefits for the senior citizens, both male and female. Like - Lower age limit for female senior citizens, higher percentage of concession for male senior citizens etc. But I enquired about these concessions with the Railway a few days back and I was told that they have not yet received any Official Order. Hence, these changes have not yet been implemented or made effective.
Now my question is : Is this true ? Any idea when they are going to made these changed effective?
There is one one more question pertaining to Senior Citizens Concessions. Are these concession available across all the trains and all types of journey. For example, if a senor citizen travels by local train in II Class, can he/she claim the concession? If yes, what is the procedure? There is one more issue : Suppose a senior citizen travels by Mail/Express Train where no night journey is involved and he/she travels by unreserved compartment without any reservation ( viz. journey like from Howrah to Durgapur by Coal Field Express in unreserved II class compartment), can he/she claims these concessions? If yes, what procedure he/she should follow to get these?
I am sure there will be quite a few of fellow IMers expert in Railway matters and I would be really grateful if they enlighten me on these issues. Thanks & regards

Effective 1st June, the discounts are as Faustus has given above, i.eFemale - 58Yrs - 50% (Currently 50% but for 60 yrs and above)
Male - 60 yrs - 40% (Currently 30%)
I am not so sure, but I don't think discount is available for local trains. The fare itself is <10. May be available in First Class Local train.
It is available for all unreserved train travel of any distance in mail/express/superfast trains.
Discounts not available for travel on Passenger trains, both unreserved and Reserved. (My Dad who is eligible was refused and clearly told this)
The procedure is pretty simple. Ask for Senior Citizen fare when buying the unreserved ticket. Carry proof of eligibility.
