There is an idea I have been thinking about for a while, but never actually done. I regularly travel between Coimbatore and Mumbai and due to the cheap flights have (unfortunately) started flying. However, I would like to start travelling by train again if I can find a convenient service.

All direct trains between CBE and any of the Mumbai stations do not travel via the Konkan railway, and so as a result even the fastest trains take 30 hours or more. However, Coimbatore is just 2hrs by rail from Shoranur which is a main stopping point for many of the fastest West Coast trains that will stop at Panvel. For example the Trivandrum Rajdhani takes just 17.20 from SRR to PNVL.

So one of the ideas I had was to take the following combination:
6627 WEST COAST EXP CBE 20.00 SRR 22.10
2431 RAJDHANI EXP SRR 00.45 PNVL 18.05

For a shorter dinner break in Shoranur, if I happen to travel on Saturday I could also consider this riskier Coimbatore to Shoranur connection:
2653 TPJ MAQ EXPRESS PTJ 22.10 SRR 23.50

On the way back the most convenient connections are a bit slower but there is time for a nice welcoming Kerala breakfast in Shoranur and it allows the cheaper Sampark Kranti to be used:
2218 KERLA S KRANTI P PNVL 12.30 SRR 08.05
3352 DHANBAD EXPRESS P SRR 09.45 CBE 11.55

I am still a bit worried of doing such connections in India, but am more at ease with doing the long journey followed by the short one rather than vice versa. So Mumbai-SRR-CBE looks more feasable than vice versa. Ideally, if I had a starting train from CBE, I would be more comfortable. Also, I do not really like the Rajdhani, so would love it if there was a better connection on the way up.

I am posting this partially in case anybody is interested in doing this. I am also interested to know if anyone has experiences of doing such connections. Please also advise if there are some better connections I could consider.

Also for another southbound option I found:
2201 KCVL GARIB RATH LTT 16.55 SRR 13.40
7229 SABARI EXPRESS P SRR 14.25 CBE 16.25

Risky I know, but at least from Shoranur there are other options in case I miss it (e.g. Later train or bus).

I have travelled by Sabari Exp quite a few times and can safely say this combination is ideal. Garib Rath is not likely to be very late. Sabari Leaves from TVC and is normally late by not more than 10-20 min at the most. You start by doing this and if the experience is good, try the other way as well.

Best Wishes.

Thanks for letting me know about your experiences. That is good to know that at least the Sabari is punctual.

I know that Garib Rath and Rajdhani etc. are reliable, but my worry is more the Konkan railway and the delays that sometimes occur on it. (Due to single track, landslips etc.). I have never actually travelled on the Konkan railway yet, so have no first hand experiences.

A problem you may have is getting availability, 1st for the very short legs, (and we're not talking about Golghar here ), and 2nd, the booking restrictions for Rajdhani trains (must include train's originating or terminating station).

I was looking at train 2685 departing Podanur at 00:15, getting to Mangalore at 09:05

Then train 2620 departing Mangalore at 14:40, getting to Panvel at 05:10 (then going onwards to Kurla, but better to get off at Panvel if going to downtown Mumbai)

It's a long wait at Mangalore, but plenty of time to stretch your legs and have a great breakfast, there's also a great ice-cream place not far from the station.
.
SOS: Missing Person...

Please look at this thread, even if you are not in India.: Have you seen Jonathan Spollen?

He could be anywhere now: You might have met him, be able to help, or give information.

Ah, I wasn't even aware of that! Thanks for the info. That is a dampner on things for the journey up. I suppose there is no way of taking that Rajdhani from Shoranur to Panvel then?
I suppose if going via Shoranur stop then other most feasible then would be:
605SR CBE TCR PASS CBE 09.45 SRR 12.35
2217 SAMPARK KRANTHI P SRR 15.15 PNVL 10.55

Yes that is indeed a different option. It's amazing how even with such a long layover the journey time is still a tiny bit quicker than the direct trains going the other route.

I think your idea of doing a layover between two long legs can have its advantages over doing a layover between a short one and a long one. (Oh help ... just try and read that sentence and think that about trains and nothing else! )

Another option I was thinking about for a way down was 2 sleeps on a train (what I would be doing anyhow with 1013) but instead spending a whole day relaxing on a beach in Goa in between. Even saves ridiculously overpriced Goa accommodation.

2133 MANGALORE EXP CSTM 22.15 MAO 07.00
0675 NAGAPATTINAM EX i MAO 19.55 CBE 10.35

compare that with:
1013 COIMBATORE EXP P LTT 22.35 CBE 06.30

3 ways to book

1, Trivandrum-Panvel, then change boarding station
2, Shoranur to Delhi
3, book Shoranur to Panvel on the foreign tourist quota, a little cheat than many people aren't aware of.

That's a 'special' train I think, so will only run for a limited time.
