Claustrophobia and Indian trains?

I forgot that I'm claustrophobic! Today I was on the subway in NYC and it was packed (more than I've ever seen it), HOT, humid and no a/c. One girl (eyes bugging out) said to her friend 'If I were claustrophobic I'd start crying right now.' I almost did! So I started wondering... is this something I should prepare myself for in India? Any advice?

Travel 2-tier AC class, avoid the side berths, and you will be surprised how much space you have! If you can stand the flight in economy class (really cramped and uncomfortable...) you'll just love the trains.

Lots of scope for walking up and down, and you can even stand by an open train door!

I've never travelled in any unreserved class, and I suggest you leave that to the claustrophiles

umm, 2 tier ac travel can get claustrophobic if the a/c malfunctions.

and avoid local trains in bombay at all costs.

Hahaha yes that's true. I was once standing in a packed Mumbai commuter carriage with my backpack on. I lifted both my feet off the floor but was still supported by the crush of bodies!!!

The other trains are fine, though, 99.99% of the time, especially the A/C classes.

Funny enough, I was never in a big crowd the last time I was in India. The most cramped I felt, was during my drive to Agra from Delhi with 3 other people in a jeep!

You could always try a 2nd class sleeper .The windows are always open (must help) and there is usualy enough going on around you to distract from any feelling of claustrophobia .
