Hello everybody!

We are planning a Circular Rail Trip using the economical telescopic fare offered by the Indian Railways. The suggested route will be as follows:

Sl.No. From Station To Station KM

1 Howrah (HWH) Varanasi Jn (BSB) 760
2 Varanasi Jn (BSB) Khajuraho (KURJ) 453
3 Satna (STA) Jabalpur (JBP) 189
4 Jabalpur (JBP) Pipariya (PPI) 177
5 Pipariya (PPI) Indore (INDB) 377
6 Indore (INDB) Vadodara (BRC) 438
7 Vadodara (BRC) Howrah (HWH) 1987

Total KM 4381

The idea behind this is to visit a few places of tourist interest falling on this route by train. For example, we would like to cover Beneras, Khajuraho, Panchmari, Mandu, Baroda etc. We would be grateful if our very own railways expert in IM can examine and scrutinize the above plan and advise us
(1)whether this route is practicable,
(2) whether Railways would consider this as Circular Route and if so whether it will qualify for concessional telescopic railway fare,
(3) whether we will get adequate time i.e. night halt to explore the intended places,
(4) what would be the likely fare for this route in 3 AC class, and finally
(5) whom should we approach for issuance of this ticket.

Thanks.

Im not an expert in any sense so can only answer some of your questions.

3) IR considers breaks of more then 24 hours between journeys as breaks. and 8 such breaks are allowed in a journey. with 7 journeys id day you are well covered for breaks.

4) IIRC fares can be 10~30% cheaper than the individual fares for all the journeys put together.

If you look to the right you will see similar threads dealing with
CJTs. Do have a look.
meh...

For Circular Journey Ticket's, you would have to start and end at the same place.
I was once told that one CJT having say 4 halts was equivalent to 2 Break Journey's, 8 halts equivalent to 4 Break Journey's. However am not too sure of that.
Fare would be calculated on the basis of a minimum distance traveled for 500 km every single day. For every subsequent halts, you would be considered to have traveled for 200 kms against every day you take a break enroute.
The total distance traveled is thus divided by two are fare for both the parts are calculated separately. Superfast and Reservation Charges are charged extra. (As and when applicable).
You may kindly visit the Station Master/DRM with an application and proposed route and they would offer you some suggestions/rectifications after which the fare would be calculated by them to enable you make reservations against the same.

@ khokonsusa, Welcome to India Mike!

If you wish to book circular ticket for the circuit, you may do so. You will have to first get the tickets issued and then go for reservation.

OP won't get a CJT for the trip as a CJT needs 8 stops not counting the start/end place.

I have taken CJT at multiple occasions where the numbers of stoppage were less than 8!

I was told that I could not take more than 8 breaks during journey as the maximum of eight (8) break journeys are admissible enroute.

8 is the maximum limit. The railways are fine with issuing CJTs with less than eight breaks of journey, though I suspect a CJT with just one break of journey would be refused
