Question chennai-mamallapuram

Good morning guys and gals..
Will be in india for 10 days over new year period ( can only skip that much work).
I will be based in delhi, but I would really like to go down south to chennai/mamallapuram.
Found a flight for $190 return to chennai, but it gets in at 00.45 in the morning!
How can I get to mamallapuram at this time?
Should I spend the night in chennai? (with such a short time?)
Thanks for the help

If you want to reach Mamallapuram in the night, bargain hard with taxi drivers (it should cost no more than 700-800 Rs) and give a call to particular hotel. When I was in mamllapuram just few days ago many tourists (I met Germans) fortunately gave a miss to Chennai and arrived in the middle of the night.

I am arriving Chennai in January - early evening - and have arranged my hotel in Mamallapuram to pick me up - well thats what I hope. I am sure that time of night they will get you to Mamallapuram fairly quickly which will be better than staying Chennai.

That would be hard bargaining indeed!

The price from a local newspaper add (City Limouzines) is 850 for a tiny Indica up to 1200 for an AC Qualis. This company I have found to be cheaper than some others.

If you can get a hotel pickup it might well be cheaper, as they are making money from you in other ways.

...and there is nothing fortunate about missing Chennai

Delhi to Mahabalipuram,

The flight from Delhi could be alot cheaper - try AirDeccan.
I stayed at the excellent Ideal Beach Resort and they picked me up from the airport for a small fee.

It was great to come comeu out from the airport at some stupid hour in the morning and have a guy waiting for with your name on a board. No hassle, no directions and straight to the hotel.

there's a prepaid taxi counter just as you go past the agents after you get your bags. Mahabs is an easy 1 1/2 hrs. on good rd. Ideal earns its name, and if they say the will pick you up, go for it.

I'm overdue for a trip there meself, if it would stop cycloning!

Ideal is perhaps great value but remote - 3 km from village, after funny long evenings in village restaurants it's not so fun returning to resort late.
Much better to stay in village.
To Nick-H: Sorry bhaya but those were not my words, words of one German couple and many other tourists also.
