Unhappy Checking identity on trains

After a great deal of effort (which I will spare you) I finally booked an e-ticket last night. When it printed out the passport number on the form was completely different from the one I typed in! Is this going to present a problem for me on the train? And if it is how can I correct it?

This is strange !! I've never printed an E-Ticket and travelled, so would not be able to really answer your question; but I suppose as long as your name in the railway records matches that on your passport and your passport photo does look like your's, you should'nt have a problem !!

I dont think you should have any problem. In fact the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) may not even ask for the ID.

one can always MISTYPE a number, as long your photo on your passport matches you ( ), you should be allright.

Worse come worse you can always proove your signature that is on your passport.

so, if i were you i wont worry about it at all.

good luck

Dear Gopal,
Your observation:-
""In fact the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) may not even ask for the ID.""
---------------
@@@It is immaterial, whether TTE asks you TO produce your ID or not, but as an E-Ticket Holder YOU MUST CARRY YOUR PHOTO-IDENTITY CARD AS INDICATED AT THE TIME OF GENERATING/PRINTING YOUR E-TICKET.

Dear GopalK,
For your information:-
----
Dear jyotimoy/Shimla,
Please go through the following important points in respect of E-Tickets:-
=======
1) On line cancellation facility for e-Tickets alone, up to the charting time for that train. (e-Tickets cannot be cancelled at counters).
---
2)e-Ticket - refers to a Railway reservation booked on this website, for the consummation of which the customer prints out an Electronic Reservation Slip which, along with the concerned authorized personal identification, constitutes the authority to travel, in lieu of the regular ticket on standard stationary.
-----------
3)ERS (Electronic Reservation Slip) - The printout in standard specified proforma containing reservation particulars, ID particulars, and instructions for use which can be used by the Passenger along with the relevant authorized Identification, as travel authority for performing the journey.
--------
4) Authorized ID - The Personal Photo Identification Card falling in any of these five categories.
1. Passport
2. Voter Identification Card
3. Driving Licence
4. PAN Card
5.Central Government Or State Government Issued Employee identification.
For Non-Indians, their Country's Passport will constitute sole authorized ID.
----------------------
5) e-Tickets - (e-reservation) The user can take a printout of the Reservation Slip and perform the journey without requiring the regular ticket to be delivered.
-----------------------
6) On e-reservation, however, the ticket will be allowed to be booked only of Confirmed or RAC status accommodation is available at the instant of booking.
--------------------
7) For e-Tickets, ICICI Payment Gateway(Credit Cards), direct debit payment options and ITZ Cash card can be used.
------------------
8) For e-Ticket - The user can take a printout of the Electronic Registration Slip (ERS) and perform the journey, duly carrying the authorized Identity Card, same as that entered at the time of the reservation.
-----------------
9) After booking an e-ticket on this site, the User confirms that the ERS slip will be necessarily used only along with the relevant authorized ID while travelling on the Indian Railways
--------------------
10) e-Tickets: E-Tickets (Reservations) can be cancelled only through Internet till Chart preparation of the train and it is not allowed at face to face Railway Counters. If the user wishes to cancel his e-Ticket, he can do so till the time of chart preparation for the train (which is normally 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train from the train starting station) through the Internet. He can log on to www.irctc.co.in and go to Booked Tickets link and select the ticket to be fully or partly cancelled and can initiate the cancellation by selecting the passengers to be cancelled. However if the Identity Card holder in the original ticket is selected for cancellation, all the passengers in the ticket would be cancelled and a fresh reservation will have to be made, duly including the ID particulars of another passengers. Cancellation would be confirmed online and the refund would be credited back to the account used for booking as for normal Internet tickets. If there is any partial cancellation of ticket please ensure that the modified ticket (Electronic Reservation Slip) is printed separately as for the original ticket.
For any claims on e-Tickets after the preparation of Reservation charts, the user has to send an email at the earliest possible time to etickets@irctc.co.in giving full details of the ticket and stating the claim, which would then be processed by IRCTC with the Railway administration offline and refunds as sanctioned by the Railway administration would be credited back to the user's account.

I am fairly confident that pkibee is not going to leave his/her passport somewhere else.

Dear Gopal,
Hence, let him tell the TTE, if / when asked, that he wrongly typed the Passport Number.
--------
By any chance, does the Passport Number also gets printed on the E-Ticket, in addition to feeding the same into the System before an E-Ticket is generated/printed?

The problem is solved. Since I was new to this process ...and my brand new top of the line computer with broadband stalled somehow on the first page (the green one) of the confirmation process, I thought this was all there was and printed it out as my e-ticket. Upon searching the site the next day I found that there was a screen behind this which I was supposed to print out for my e-ticket ( a white one). The passport number on the final "white" sheet was correct...the one on the previous sheet was just a strange jumble of numbers and characters in the passport space. Go figure.
