Chart not prepared?
Chart not prepared?
Just got an email for one of my train tix saying Chart not prepared.
I take it this mean they haven't ticketed me yet? It's still a couple of weeks away and they're supposed to be delivering the tix to my hotel.

Chart not prepared probably means that they have still not alotted a coach and berth/seat.
Your ticket will be printed as soon as the allocation is done.

I have no experience of Internet bookings; hopefully someone else has experienced the same thing.
Are the tickets for First Class (1A or FC)?
If so, you will only get 'Confirmed' on your ticket and not a berth number, the charts are prepared late for 1A & FC.

Steven,
I faced an almost similar situation last November, when I booked my 2AC ticket for the Howrah Mail from Nashik Road to Howrah. This was not an internet booking, I booked personally at the ticket window.
My ticket showed W/L, meaning waiting list, but under the "seat/berth no." it showed "confirmed". No coach or berth no. was indicated ! I asked the booking clerk the meaning of this peculiar coding and was told that the ticket was a confirmed one, but I would know my coach no. and berth no. only at the station at the time of departure !
Sure enough, on the day, when I checked the chart at the station, I had been allotted a coach and berth no., the ticket was indeed a confirmed one!
It is sometimes difficult to fathom the ways of IR !

I've never heard of that before, could it be a special arrangement because of the Kumbh Mela?
I agree about Indian Railways, just when you think your beginning to understand how they work; you hear something else that confuses you, I think I could live till 100 and still not understand IR.

OK, just to clarify, my tix are all 3A or 2A, and I have coach and berth numbers assigned when I check the Indian Railways Online Doohicky (apologies for the technical term) and they appear as CNF (confirmed... I hope!)
Yet they all say Chart not Prepared which doesn't seem very reassuring.

I assume your checking on the Indian Railways site using your PNR number, if the site gives you a coach and berth number; that is all you need.
At times they add a few more extra coaches if the demand for tickets are more. Mostly to the long distance important trains at the peak seasons. Till the very last minute they can’t predict how many extra coaches to be add, as a majority of the cancellations happens only at the last few hours. But the decision has been taken to add the extra coaches during the reservation period itself. So they reserve without allotting you the coach and seat number if you are in this tail end of reservation. The update your seat No. automatically the moment the new coaches are allotted.
Chart preparation is a gate point in the reservation. This is nothing but freezing of all the reservations, accounting the cancellations and final allocation of seats to the WL passengers. This is typically done just a couple of hours before the departure of the train. And the “Chart” is handed over from the reservation to the traveling coach staffs.
Steve… BTW hope that your CJT issue is decoded!!

What does it really mean?
Charts not prepared.
When you book a ticket with Indian Railways you are alloted a seat in a coach (depending on the availability) or a waiting list number.
Depending upon final status in all the coaches (AC, Normal Coach and First Class), your ticket may be upgraded to a higher class (Tickets are chosen on a random basis). So, your final seat and coach may be different from one initially alloted to you. This information is declared in chart which is prepared 3 hrs before the departure of train from its source.
Hence everyone will have to see the message "Charts not prepared" before three hours.
so conclusion is:
Nothing to worry about it.
If you have booked the ticket and have a confirm reservation you will get a berth to sleep .

and this thread is even useful for someone in 2009
Dear tukul,
##There is no worry for the passengers with Confirmed Reservation who have the Coach Number & Seat Number (or) Berth Number in their Journey Ticket.
##But those with RAC Status/Waiting List Status have to wait till the Charts are prepared to know whether they have moved into Confirmed Status/RAC Status.
##Another segment of passengers are those with Confirmed Status in IAC, who have to wait till the Charts are prepared to know the Cabin/Coupe Number in which they got the Berth (UB or LB).
##Finally, the Charts are finalised three or four hours before the scheduled departure of the train from the Originating Station.
##The Charts for Remote Location Quotas are finalised three or four hours before the scheduled departure of the train from the station from where such Remote Location Quota operates.
##Those who book E-Tickets need to be very careful about the times at which the Charts are finalised, because cancelling an E-Ticket after Chart Preparation is an avoidable nuisance.
