Changing trains on tight schedule?

As experience tells, trains are often late (not only in India). How does Indian Railways handle train delays if you want to catch a connecting train? Would it wait?

For example, would it be realistic to arrive in Bangalore at 06:55 (scheduled time) and catch the train to Mysore at 07:35 (not to tell the Express at 07:00)? If you miss the connection (and your reservation), will you have a chance to get a seat on the next train? How will the TTE react on this?

in general terms, if your train is late and you miss your connection then you're stuffed.

In specific terms, ie arriving in Banaglore for Mysore, then if you miss your connection you just pop across the road and catch a bus/minibus instead.

No. Period. If you miss your connection, you make alternative arrangements, e.g., get the next train, take the bus, etc.

Others have answered about what IR is going to do. They would refund your onward ticket, though (after deducting reservation fees, etc.).
It is not safe to leave only a 40 minute gap between trains. Train delay is a combination of several factors: How far away did the train start its journey from? Did anybody pull the chain in between so that they could get off in front of their home? Was there a landslide on the way? Did somebody try to commit suicide by jumping in front of the train? Is the train running on a single-track route? ......

Many thanks for all the answers - that's what I've pretty much expected. So I will give me (and IR) more time and book a different connection.

I would add a little to what manojb have already posted...
You will get refund for your ticket if the train is late by more than 4 hours and you miss the next train due to this. You will need endorsement on your ticket for the delay from either TTE or the Station master before you can get the cash.

For reference..........

'Through' tickets can no longer be booked.

Each train has to be booked individualy (though they can be booked at the same time)

Dear anindya,
Your observation:-
"You will get refund for your ticket if the train is late by more than 4 hours and you miss the next train due to this."
-----
@@This applies to the Boarding Station only, but not once you reach your destination. Ofcourse, if you miss the connecting train on which you had reservation, then you will be permitted to take the next available train.
-----
@@As stated by Mr.Steven, this facility is gone due to withdrawal of Telescopic Benefit. Henceforth, if you miss the connecting train, on which you had reservation, then you will have to take the refund by foregoing 50% of the amount, and then make some alternative arrangements.
