Hello,

I was trying to buy train tickets from abroad.

I have realized that my old e-mail address which is no longer active is still registered with IRCTC. I had remembered to change it with cleartrip but I had forgotten about IRCTC. Anyway, I went into IRCTC and type in my account name and what I believe is my correct password. But I am taken to the "Forgot password" page. And then, nothing works. I am asked for my "Pet Name", etc which I can not recall if I even entered and if I did, if I thought it was my pet's name or my pet name. All possible tries have met with strong resistance.

I am concerned that I do not know this password (I last used the system in December 2015). And from what I understand Cleartrip will take the payment and then what happens with the password that may not match. In any case, the email id associated with irctc does not exist.

So, what happens if I make the payment on cleartrip and if there is no password/account match? The IRCTC account exists.

Btw, I understand that multiple accounts on I can lead to deactivation. So, therefore I am concerned about starting a new account with my new e-mail id.

I did send an e-mail to care@irctc.co.in but from my new e-mail address. Not sure if that means that they will ignore it.

Thanks very much for your suggestions!

I can't imagine anything is going to happen. I had some IRCTC/Cleartrip issue (I don't remember what it was) and I got a new email address dedicated to IRCTC/Cleartrip. They're worried about people opening 100s of accounts and selling the tickets. I have the username and password in several places so I don't lose them again.

I never had a cleartrip account. Solo IRCTC. I would use the original email (i presume you still have that) and try retriving your password. All my passwords are stored in keychain ( a mac-ism) and i have had no problem.

nycank, my understanding from aarem's post is that he doesn't have access to the original email. It is defunct.

Entering 'Moti' as his dog's name does not solve the problem. His pooch was called something else.

Yes, that is correct. I do not have access to the original e-mail. Actually, I suspect that I never entered my "pet name" but I do not recall.

Are duplicate accounts allowed? Thanks!

Btw, no e-mail yet from IRCTC. I did send them a copy of my passport also to speed things up.

Would calling these numbers help, or are two separate entities: the care@irctc.co.in and the phone numbers?

Customer Care No. : 011-39340000, 011-23340000 (language : Hindi and English)

Chennai Customer Care No. : 044-25300000 (language : Tamil and English).

What is the difference between the first set of numbers and the second, other than Tamil and Hindi.

Honestly, I can't speak for them, but I don't think it would be a problem. In any case, you have nought to lose.

The 011 numbers are in Delhi and the 044 one in Chennai. Try both.

Having the need to link Cleartrip and the IRCTC accounts put a spanner in my online booking of tickets a few years back, due to forgotten passwords / no Indian mobile number, etc.

I simply created a new free yahoo email, and started again. I sent a jpg photo of my passport instead of a scan. It all worked for me with a fresh start, and that honestly seems the way to go.

Good luck!

Edwin.

OK, the Delhi numbers are busy after a bit of music (several times) and the Chennai numbers can not connect.

Can I give an India number for now to get an OTP and change later? Because it seems to me that care@ictc.co.in still has to respond because of me having to receive their OTP through e-mail. Or is the mobile number sacrosanct and can not change?

What I don't understand about India is why everything is so heavy-handed. Makes the simplest of things an obstacle course. No doubt that the touts have their jugaar methods to obviate all the checks and balances.

Is it easy to change the cleartrip IRCTC account?

If you have an Indian mobile number, no problem... The passwords will be sent to it. Not an option for most foreign folk overseas.

Please note that the whole "registration" system changed a few years ago, from how it worked before.

The problem in India is there are more folk requiring train tickets than tickets available. Registering is to cut down on fraud where possible.

Sadly, everything does seem mired in treacle... We get an easing of the e-visa system at the same time as they ban certain currency and the ATM's are mostly empty or closed...

Have a look at Indian section of Seat61.com, which I believe has the correct procedure to obtain a new registration.

Well, I tried setting up a new account but apparently, they will not allow for foriegn user registration since I have an Indain passport.

Dear Customer,

Sorry for inconvenienced caused to you.

We would like to inform you that your nationality is Indian and you attached the passport of India so you are not applicable user foreign registration user of IRCTC.
Therefore,we suggest you to take help of your family member in India to registered the Indian mobile number and complete the registration process yourself or take help of your family member user id of IRCTC so that you can book the ticket.

Thanks & Regards
Aditya Narayan Agnihotri
Executive, Customer Care

Question:

1. I can get someone to give me his/her mobile number but can this be changed after that? Or is the OTP still going to be needed at that point?

2. Alternatively, and this is more honest, can I register my wife (she is an US national) but my credit card (in my name) is the one without foreign transaction fees. Does the IRCTC account have to be in the name of the persion paying for the ticket?

As an aside, I am so glad that finally my nationality has been decided to be Indian! By IRCTC, no less!!

I believe the otp is a "one time password" for initial registration only. You can just recieve that from your relative by email, once they get it on their mobile phone.
You don't need to have any access to that phone again, you can run your bookings, once the account is registered, from your laptop or other smartphone.

Cheers,

Ed.

So, I can change the mobile number then after that? And that will not trigger another round of OTPs? Some security then!

We seem to be at cross purposes here.

You recieve a code on the Indian phone number you specify, you create an account on irctc with the otp and can link that to cleartrip if you desire.

There is no need to "change" any telephone numbers, just keep note of all your log in information which comes in the email and use the otp.

I have no further info, do let us know how you get on...
