Changing Boarding Point on Eticket

Hi,
We have booked etickets online for the 19.55 overnight train from Ernakulam to Gokarna on 23rd December in AC2. We have now decided that we would like to go to Kannur first, and leave from Kannur on the same train. The problem is we can't cancel and rebook because there are no seats left on the train and there are big waiting lists. We dont want to loose our seats if we dont get on until Kannur.

Is there a way of changing our Boarding Point to Kannur, so that we dont loose the seats?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you scroll down, you will see a few topics under "similar threads", maybe they will help. They seem promising.

Wow, 02:20 departure for a 6 hour journey, good job you're in 2A.

The good news, yes, you can change the boarding point when you're in Ernakulam.

The bad news, one of you, (the first named person on the ticket), has to go to Ernakulam Jn (there are 2 stations, Jn & Town, n is known locally as Ernakulam South), once at the station, have a word with the reservations manager and he will tell you what to do, or do it for you, sounds easy....leave at least a couple of hours for this, and that doesn't include getting to/from the station.

I have a similar question, but I remember reading at some point on IM that if you wanted to board at the very next stop after the one your ticket is for, there shouldn't be any problem with that and you shouldn't have to officially change your eticket.

I guess the logic was that they won't give away your seat at your originally ticketed station if you don't get on, and as long as you get on at the very next station, there will have been no other chance for your seat to have been given away.

Does that sound about right? I'm afraid I won't know until that very day which station I'll be closer to.

As long as the 2 stations are in the same city, that should be OK.

Oh, otherwise no? I have a ticket that has me boarding at Dehra Dun, but I might want to board at Haridwar, which is the next stop south, depending on what I end up doing. I don't mean to hijack this thread, but do you think I would need to go to the station at Haridwar the day before if I decide to board from there?

If you have to go to the station anywhere, it would be Dehra Dun, as that's where you ticket is from, and that's where the ticket examiner will board the train.

I'm a bit of a risk taker (or fool ) with trains/tickets in India, and I'm always ready to take a risk (though it got me fined a couple of times last month), if it were me, and on this particular route, I'd probibly just take the chance and board the train at Haridwar without changing my boarding point, the trains don't fill up at Dehra Dun and I'd imagine that a ticket examiner would wait till after Haridwar to check tickets (or to give berths away.

But I've been wrong on many occations, and I think anyone who'd travelled with me in India would say "TAKE NO NOTICE OF THIS MAN, HE'S MAD"

But that's what I'd do.

I think it should not be a problem if you are boarding at the next station and it is not necessary that the TTE would not give away the seat if you are not present at the boarding station as usually he would come around to check only after some time and not necessarily immediately once the train starts. If it is the starting point of the train then usually the TTE would start checking only after some time especially for long distance trains where there are a few stations in or near the city itself (like in Mumbai). You can always take a chance with the Haridwar option instead of boarding at Dehra Dun and get away without any problems. This might not always hold true in other places where your seat could officially be given away to the next person in the RAC / waiting list or people with general tickets without reservations who also board the trains in the hope of getting a berth when there is none available. Hope this helps.

Steven: Getting fined on Indian Railways is something I did not expect from you!!! ;-))

Cheers,
Aadil.

It all depends. Last year one member nearly lost his berth for boarding at Nizamuddin instead of New Delhi during peak holiday season.
As Steven suggests go to Ernakulam station at get your boarding station altered.

We are booked on Trivandrum Mail from Ernakulam Town to Chennai on 12th Jan in 2A

Do you guys recon it'd be ok, if we were to board at the next station- Aluwa (it is closer to where we'd be staying), without changing the boarding point?

Change in Boarding point

I have booked an e-ticket from Patna to Pune in Patna-Pune Exp but kept boarding point at Mughalsarai. Now, there has been some change in the plan and now I am planning to board at Patna itself. In my ticket boarding point is showing as Mughalsarai but ticket is from Patna itself. Will i be fined for this?? Please help in this regard......

The reservation rules of IR refers to change of boarding point, when you're planning to board from a subsequent station from where you're booked. => http://www.indianrail.gov.in/resrules.html (ammendment here => http://www.indianrail.gov.in/new_rules.html).

I guess that you would need to visit Patna station with some time in hand (pref. at least about 2 hours) and check with the Reservation Officer/ Station Supervisor.

Change of boarding point is allowed ONLY ONCE. Since you have already exercised that option of changing the boarding point from Patna to MGS, you CANNOT change the boarding point back to Patna.

If travelling ex-Patna, you would be treated as travelling without ticket and fined accordingly.

The only hope is that you 'manage' the TTE or alternatively, if possible, roam around inside the train between coaches and avoid the TTE till the train reaches MGS.

Mr.Animesh,

##Please take a waitlisted ticket from Patna to Mughalsarai and most probably it might get confirmed against your berths which you have to occupy ex.MGS.

##Even if it doesn't gets confirmed, please show thye waitlisted ticket and also the confirmed tickets to the TTE and occupy your berths.
