Car drive

I am planning a 3 weeks' trip to Northern India in January. I am having a hard time preparing the itinerary, there is so much to see...
As this is my first time I think I should stick to the basics: Delhi/ Agra / Khajuraho / Varanasi and Rajahstan. Originally I though of flying but now I am hesitating about renting a car and driver. From what I read at this forum and other forums as well it seems that roads are pretty dangerous. Do you think a rented car + driver is a safe way of travellign around or should I fly and rent a a taxi locally to make excursions and day trips?

Unless you spend all your time in your hotel, you're going to end up on the roads regardless. We sell car trips, so obviously we aren't likely to discourage you from renting a car and driver. But if you fly between stations, you really do miss so much! Definitely make it clear to your driver that you want to plan in such a way that you are not on the road after dark. Recently someone wanted us to pick them from the airport at 1:30 am in Delhi and then drive them straight to Agra to see the sun rise over the Taj. We had to respectfully decline. We don't want our drivers driving all night, especially without sleep!

PS Flying to Khajuraho IS a good idea. The roads around there are some of the worst in India.

hope u remember its pretty cold in Delhi in Jan! Bring a sweater...

Thanks Yatri. By the way, is there heating in the middle ranmge hotels during the cold months (or is it only weeks?)
