If you booked on IRCTC.com then yes -- says so on bottom of the ERS.

Not sure what the penalties are if any but these would be on the IRCTC site.

If you booked with others eg cleartrip you will loose fees paid to them .. but these are minimal anyway.

You need to give fuller details in post - it will help people answer questions ... eg if Taikal ticket then definately no refunds...

No problem as long as you do it in time (about 2 days before travel). It will cost you Rs 70 or so, but I have even done it when the system gave me a berth I did not like.

AFAIK, e-ticket can be canceled even after departure of train. The cancellation charges would be higher when compared to what they are before the departure of the train.

You cannot cancel e-tkt after the train departs (from the station you have booked). For that you need to send a mail to care@irctc.co.in. The will verify it with the railway list to ensure that you have not boarded and then refund the money. This will take about a month.

##Correct, but it is always advisable to cancel an E-Ticket, four hours before the scheduled departure of the train.

Dear dipydoo,

You cannot cancel e-tkt after the train departs

##You can, but you may have to wait for two or three money months to get your money back, but not before 50% of the amount paid by you is deducted towards Cancellation Charges. This is acumbersome process, and hence, it is ALWAYS advisable to cancel an E-Ticket before Charts are finalised which is done Four Hours before the scheduled departure of the train.

##An E-Ticket can never be cancelled across the PRS Counter.

##As such, after the departure of the Train, an e-mail had to be sent to IRCTC that the passenger cannot perform the journey and the ticket may be treated as cancelled.

##After verification of the facts with the Railway Authorities, necessary action will be initiated by IRCTC to credit the eligible amount into the Passenger's Bank Account.
