Can I travel in Shatabdi without reservation?

I was thinking of doing a short travel in Shatabdi express. The train starts from Chennai, comes non stop to Bangalore and then goes to Mysore. I am sure that there will be tonns of seats in the train, but what I am not sure is if I can buy a ticket for shatabdi from the counter and just hop in without reservations !!!

Is that doable ?

You will be fined if you get on without a reservation for the class you are found in.

I'm sure I remember seeing a special kiosk near the platform that the Shatabdi departs from (on the far right of the main station building (the building on the right as you approach))

From this kiosk, you can purchase 'day of travel' tickets.

The last time I was in Chennai was about 4 years ago though.

Good luck.

I used to do this quite often in the baroda-bombay sector. they had counters where handwritten tickets that looked like airline tickets were sold on the spot, depending on the seat availability.

But this was 6-7 years back --- things could be different now.

however, logic says that if there is a seat available, there should be a way to get it

Might that be the new shatabdi that starts sometime this month? (departing Bangalore 06:00, getting to Chennai at 11:00, then departing Chennai 18:00 & getting to Bangalore at 23:00)

Big Z - Nay the timings now does not concur to that theory. It reaches bangalore from Chennai at about 11 am and leave to chennai at about 16.15.

Maybe it is meant for something shorter than college, but in Bangalore

Is there a shatabdi kiosk on Bangalore station?

I'm sure the Shatabdi will arrive on the platform nearest the main entrance, if there is a kiosk, it will be on that platform.

sudheer , you must be talking about 2007 Shatabdi Ex. Dept. Chennai at 6 AM & Arr. Bang. at 10.50AM. This train has only CC & 1AC class. For which reservation is a must. But as big zero mentioned , here in Kolkata too there are some trains (for short distance & for daily passengers ) where you can buy the ticket over counter & board the train depending upon the availability of seat. Dont know whether it stands for Shatabdi too.

Sudheer,
I have been travelling on Shatabdis for some time now. As per experience there are special counters on almost every station which issues Shatabdi tickets cum reservation for the day of travel. Stations like Howrah, Bhopal,Bangalore, Ranchi,Bokaro, Gwalior and Chandigarh have such counters. Personally I mostly get my tickets on the day of travel only. Hope this helps

There are many trains which go to Mysore. But I find that only this one has a sensible timing by which I can leasurely travel on a lazy weekend. Plus the other aspect is to show my 4 year old daughter what a train journey is all about.

Hence thinking of taking the shatabdi. I am willing to bet that the people getting out in Bangalore is going to be more than those boarding in (to Mysore)! And I am flexible, if I dont get the shatabdi. I shall just get into some train, go to the next station and come back!

All just for the fun of travelling in the train for the first time for a four year old

As others have mentioned above, there has to be a kiosk for selling last minute unsold tickets for the Shatabdi at Bangalore station.

You certainly cannot buy a platform ticket, hop on to the Shatabdi and hope to get a ticket on the train, the way you can do on other expresses. I also do not think that you can buy an unreserved superfast ticket for CC from the unreserved ticket counter at the last minute and board the Shatabdi. In either case you'll be treated as travelling without a valid ticket and fined/detrained or whatever.

Pardon my asking so, but what prevents you from booking a ticket, say even one day in advance ?

All the more reason for you to stand in a queue and book before hand, though your child does not need a ticket. Take some trouble for your kid and travel royally on a royal train.

By unreserved, I meant without prior reservation. For sure I am not going to hop in with a platform ticket

Simple answer - Too close to weekend for online booking (thinking of saturday trip) and too lazy to go there and book before the travel time. Blame it on bangalore traffic or laziness
