Breaking a train journey
I will be travelling from Calcutta to Guwahati by train with a stopover for a day or two in Patna for a look at Bod Gaya.
I believe there is a rule where you can break your journey providing it is over a certain distance. Can anyone advise me of the rule(s) which apply to a journey like this? Thanks, Colin |

break of journey
the rule is as follows.
if your journey is over 500 km you can take 1 break (after at least 500 km) for up to 48 hours, if over 1000 km 2 breaks and so on. you will need reservations for each part of your journey, and you need to get your ticket endorsed by the station master at the station you take a break (as soon as you leave the train) you can get distances from 'trains at a glance' |

Station Master
How much of a hassle is it to get that endorsement from the station manster, and how does one go about it? Does it save money/hassle as opposed to buying seperate tickets/reservations for each leg when you get your ticket? I always wondered how this worked. Thanks for the info.!

station master
ive never tried this, and i am sure the station master will have many complicated rules to follow, but his office is normaly quite easy to find, (it is often on the nearest platform to the station entrance on smaller stations, and on large stations ask a member of staff)
as for cost, you can save a lot of money by doing this, the further you travel the cheaper it is, and by using the `break of journey' rule you can save money. there is also a `circular journey' ticket, this allows up to 8 journeys starting at one city and after all your journeys ending at the same city, a real pain to set up with the station master, but once done you have all your reservations booked and only paid about half of the single journey fares. |
