break journey rule - how to use it in online reservations?

I understand Indian railways offers a break journey rule. How can one avail of this when booking trains online?

You can't book a 'break of journey' ticket online.

is it proper to break the travel at nagpur which is enroute chennai-delhi for a period od 2 days (dist is 1006kms) ??

You can break, provided you book the ticket in the PRS Counter, but NOT ONLINE!!!

I want to go to Patna Jn(Bihar) from Madgaon(Goa) by train. In this route I will change the connecting train at Mumbai. From Mumbai to Patna I want to break the Journey at Vindhyachal. For this I have to take seperate tickets from Vindhyachal to Patna for confirm reservation or I can get confirm seat for onward journey?

you can do it on the reservation counter from the place you book your tickets. there is a limit for the time for the onward journey.

As my friends already mentioned that break journey tickets can only be booked from PRS. I just want to provide you a link with the rules.

Be aware that the above link (post #7) gives old information that is not valid anymore (for at least a couple of years)!

For example, you can break your journey for only one day now (not two days). Also, no endorsement is necessary at the station you break your journey.

Please ask at the counter for the latest rules, rather than believing the IR website.

##As per the prevailing Rules, a Passenger travelling for distance of 1000Kms. or less is allowed One Break. However, such break is allowed after crossing 500Kms. from the Station, from where the passenger had booked his ticket. At the Break Journey Station, the passenger can stay for Two Days, excluding the day of arrival and day of departure; if you include these two, then the passenger can stay for 4 days.

##If the passenger is holding a ticket for more than 1000Kms., he is allowed Two Break Journeys.

##At the Stations where the journey is broken, the passenger must obtain Break Journey Endorsement & Commence of Journey Endorsement from the Station Staff on duty.

##I was informed, no such endorsement is required, if reservation is made for onward journey from the Break Journey point.

##Break Journey is NOT allowed for Rajadhani & Shatabdi.

##At the time of "reserving" the Ticket, the name of the Station where the journey is going to be broken MUST be indicated.

##First you take the ticket as Madgaon to Patna with Resv.upto Panvel (OR) Kalyan, then make your onward reservation from Kalyan to Vindhyachal by 13202; from Vindhyachal to Patna, you make reservation either by the same 13202 by another train that suits you.

##If the PRS Counter allows you, then you can also make reservation as Madgaon to Patna with Resv.upto CSTM; make your onward reservatilon by 12322 from CSTM to BDL; calculate how many days you requre at Vindhyachal (**not more than 4 days) and make one more reservation from Vindhyachal to Patna by 13202 or any other train that connects Vindhyachal with Patna.

##Please note that you cannot make the above bookings through IRCTC/ Cleartrip.

That's not what I was told! I was allowed only one day (excluding the day of arrival and day of departure)!


Aren't these contradictory?

everybody says it is not necessary to get your ticked endorsed for break journey.i had to argue a lot before the station master endorsed it.page 253 trains at a glance very clearly stipulates endorsement by station manager/ticket collector.
better to be safe than sorry in case you come across a TTE who is a stickler for rules.
eg.last month i did 3 train journeys on e tickets 2 TTEs were ok with photocopy of an identification whereas the third insisted on the original.luckily i had my driving license

The first case is applicable when you have not incorporated the break of journey in the booking itself. Say, you have a through reservation from Mumbai to howrah, but decide to break journey at any station beyond 500 km from starting, you need to take an endorsement from th station where you got down.

However if the break is incorporated into the booking itself, then it is not needed. In this case the ticket is issued thus: Journey Ticket: Mumbai-Howrah, reservation upto Break journey point, Reservation slip: from break journey point to howrah.

The Reservation slip is linked to the main ticket, is invalid without it and so the main journey ticket should NOT be surrendered at the break journey point.

A photocopy of an ID is invalid, though some TTE's accept them.
