Currently I'm planning a 3 weeks trip in October:
Mumbai - Hubli - Hospet - Madgaon - Ernakulam - Madgaon

I have booked all tickets online but I didn't get confirmed tickets for all legs. 3 legs are on waiting list and not quite sure - even after reading many post about PQWL, RAC, RLGN ... - if I will get a confirmed booking.

DR --> UBL
Train Number / Train Name / Date / From / To / Class
1017 / CHALUKYA EXPRES / 13-10-2008 / DR / UBL / 2A
Booking Status / Current Status
Passenger 1 / W/L 1 ,PQWL / W/L 1
Passenger 2 / W/L 2 ,PQWL / W/L 2

MAO --> ERS
Train Number / Train Name / Date / From / To / Class
2618 / MNGLA LKSDP EXP / 20-10-2008 / MAO / ERS / 2A
Booking Status / Current Status
Passenger 1 / W/L 6 ,RLGN / W/L 4
Passenger 2 / W/L 7 ,RLGN / W/L 5

ERS --> MAO
Train Number / Train Name / Date / From / To / Class
6312 / BIKANER EXPRESS / 25-10-2008 / ERN / MAO / 2A
Booking Status / Current Status
Passenger / 1 W/L 2 ,RSWL / W/L 2
Passenger / 2 W/L 3 ,RSWL / W/L 3

I'm a little bit scared about the PQWL, RSWL and RLGN from the booking status. Should I worrie or just wait and cross fingers to get confirmation?

Are there may alternative routes I could use?

No time for a detailed reply.

Try Mumbai to Raichur, lots more trains, faster travel and better times. then a bus to Hospet/Hampi.

Steven,

About the bus from Raichur towards Hospet. Do you know if there is a connection between Raichur and Sindhnur and then further from Sindhnur to Hospet ?

Haiko, try to book on SL class, there will be enough seats available, and ask for an upgrade once you've boarded the train. In the worst case you'll have to make the trip in SL class (wich is not so bad) but you'll reach your destination.

Raichur doesn't look so bad. What's the time a bus takes from Raichur to Hampi?

And any ideas about the Madgaon problem? Is there another way getting from GOA to Kerala?

Haiko,
At this time there are still 24 seats available in 3A on train 2618, general class. Try to book this and cancel your 2A booking.
If you don' get anything confirmed before you arrive in India, try to book on tourist quota as soon as you arrive in Mumbai. There are several tourists seats available for this traject on trains 2618, 6345 and 2432 in different classes. For booking tourist class in Mumbai, go to CST station, upstairs, the window on the far left.

Thanks for your hints

I've seen that from MAO to ENR there are seats available in 3A. Will user this class.
Any idea how to travel back to Goa? Didn't see any available tickets for any class.

When looking for availability, you'll see a drop down box....

Click on 'Foreign' to see if there is any foreign tourist quota on a particular train.

2 things to remember: -

The tourist quota tickets may already be sold.

You can only book tourist quota tickets in India, at a reservation office that has a foreign tourist window, then you need to pay in foreign currency (or have an encashment certificate or an ATM receipt), you also need your passport I think, but I can't really remember.

BTW, the Indian Railway website has pulled, a saucy little Russian website I think ), and gone to bed for the night, you can't check for availability between....

23:30 and 05:00 (Indian time)
18:00 and 23:30 (GMT)
19:00 and 00:30 (British summer time)

I bet some of those times are wrong.

To check on the tourist quota from the indianrail website, I go to the "train between important station" link and search or the trains between the stations I want. Once the list of trains appears, you can check availability per quota by changing the general quota into tourist quota in the box somewhere on top left on the screen. It's kinda difficult to explain wthout the screen in front of me, ...

You want to travel back to Goa from Ernakulam ? What date ?

Haiko,
I found 4 trains to travel back from Ernakulam to Madgaon on 25th Oct. They are all pretty much fully booked. Train 2653 has two seats in 1A available. This train, and trains 2617, 6312 and 6346 have also two seats Tourist quota available on SL class.
