Boarding at a different station...
In about a month, I'm going to be making a trip from Mumbai to Aurangabad. If I buy a ticket from Mumbai CST, where the Aurangabad trains depart, but end up staying with a friend who lives in the suburbs (Thane), can I board at Thane, a couple stops down the line, or do I risk forfeiting my seat if I board at a later stop?
Now what if, instead, I buy my ticket to start out from Thane, but end up in the city, and decide to board from the origin point, at CST? Do I risk a fine if my ticket says Thane but I board at CST? And what about on the return journey. If I buy a ticket from Aurangabad to Thane, but end up deciding to stay on the train for a couple more stops to CST, do I risk a fine? |

Just buy 'Thane-Aurangebad' tickets, if needed you can pay the extra on the train.
Your seat/berth for a Thane reservation would be empty from CST to Thane, but like you say, there is a risk the TTE could give your seat/berth away before it reached Thane if you had a CST reservation. |

...........but in the return journey, you reserve your ticket upto CSTM and then get down, wherever you want including journey by Suburban Trains from Kalyan/Thane onwards upto CSTM.

what i would suggest is that you buy a ticket from CSTM to Aurangabad and board from anywhere between Mumbai and Thane.
As far as I know, the TTE cannot allocate the berth unless he has weaited till the next station for the passenger to turn up. Moreso in the case of Mumbai, where passengers majorly would turn up either at Dadar and Thane / Kalyan,.

Puneet is right. I buy group tickets [from CST] and most people in the group board from Dadar or Kurla or Thane or Kalyan. In most cases TTE comes to check only after Kalyan.
If the OP buys a ticket from CST and boards the train at Thane, the seat will NOT be given out by the TTE coz more than half of us Mumbai folks are doing it. If he buys from Thane, then the option of boarding from CST is effectively closed. The difference is just some ten rupees. I know the OP is not worried about rupees, but whether his seat will be declared "no show". This will happen after Kalyan and certainly NOT at Thane.
