I am planning a tour of Shimla in the coming months. I will be travelling with my spouse from Kolkata and wanted to check which is a better way of reaching Shimla by train. Actually we want to minimize the train journey time and yet have a comfortable journey. As of now, I have the below options and want to know which will be a better one to choose.

1. HWH-NDLS Rajdhani --> DEL-KALKA Mail --> SHIVALIK EXP.
This will require a stoppage in Delhi of about 12 hours.
2. HWH-NDLS Rajdhani --> NDLS-KALKA Shatabdi --> SHIVALIK EXP.
This will reduce waiting time in Delhi, but will require overnight waiting at Kalka.
3. HWH-KALKA Mail --> SHIVALIK EXP.
This requires no stoppage at Delhi and will need least waiting. But means we have to spend a long time in train.
I also have a few other questions:

1. Considering we go for a stoppage at Delhi, is it possible to leave our luggage at the station luggage room and go for a small sightseeing and lunch outside before returning back?
2. How far is the Old Delhi station from New Delhi?
3. There is a Sealdah-NDLS Rajdhani also which leaves around the same time. Is there any specific recommendation on choosing this one over HWH-NDLS Rajdhani?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Option 3 would be most convenient.

if you are going by train go for the Delhi-Kalka(option 3). You do have other options for Himachal in general (e.g. through Pathankot or Chandigarh) but for Shimla Delhi-Kalka is the best train.

If you want do local sight seeing in Delhi, you can do that on your way back. For example, if Manali is the end point of your tour in Himachal, from there get on board of a overnight bus to Delhi.
Two roads diverged in a wood and I I took the one less traveled by.

Thanks for the quick replies. I just have one more question. It looks like Shivalik Exp departure time is very close to the Kalka Mail arrival time. Considering train delays are not very uncommon, will it be a problem if we arrive a bit late at Kalka. I am not sure if Shivalik will wait till Kalka mail arrives.

A) You can take train#2273 (Duront express) from Howrah-New Delhi. Then connect to Kalka Shatabdi (you should be able to catch it). Then connect at Kalka with the #255 himalayan queen.
This gets you to Shimla in 28 hours
(Note: The 1st train only runs twice a week)

B) Another option is to take a train from Howrah to Ambala (these trains bypass Delhi). And then connect to either the Kalka Shatabdi or Himalayan Queen. At kalka you will catch the Shimla bound Himalayan queen. This may not save you much time over the direct Howrah-Kalka train though.

Train#2331 (Himgiri express) will be the train that connects you

Option A will be the best, if the days fit.

1) You can leave your luggage in the "cloak room" at major stations. Ask whether they are open all the time or not before you leave the luggage
2) Old Delhi is about 5km from New Delhi (20-30 mins by auto)
3) Sealdah or Howrah is upto you, whichever is convenient.
