Hi, As first time traveller I'd appreciate advice from the wise ones on the best train connection from Mumbai to Udaipur, ideally with a 1A class (luxury, but why not!).
While I dont like changing trains in the middle of the night, the best I can find is: - Train 2925 Paschim Express Mumbai (Bandra terminus) to Kota Junction - departing 11.35 and arriving in Kota Jn at 2.05 - Train 2963 NZM - UDZ Super Express to Udaipur - departing Kota Junction at 3.10 and arriving at Udaipur at 8.30. Any other suggestions? Aussie 5 |

The fastest route is via Ahmedabad, there are loads of trains from Mumbai to Ahmedabad.
From Ahmedabad there is a slow daytime train and the following overnight train, there are no Air Con First Class carriages on the Ahmedabad-Udaipur route. Train 9944 departs Ahmedabad daily at 23:05 and gets to Udaipur at 07:40. 2-tier air con (2A) = Rs 621 First Class (not air con)(FC) = Rs 451 Sleeper Class (not air con)(SL) = Rs 154

Thanks for your very informative response - you are a font of wisdom! We will be travelling in mid November - do you think that we would miss the airconditioning if we went First Class non airconditioned from Ahmedabad? Aussie 5 |

No, you will need less blankets than you do in Air Con First Class.
Get to your (Udaipur) train early, see the train attendant and arrange for a 'bed roll' (Rs 20 or 30), this will contain a pillow, sheets and blankets. It's a good idea to take a cloth to give the seats a quick clean, they can get dusty. Remember to close the window and lock the door before you go to sleep, hands can go through the open window and take anything within reach. The non air con compartments are a bit smaller than the air con ones (also you will be in a metre gauge train, your train from Mumbai will be broad gauge). I still feel the aircon first class compartments are a bit sterile and bloody cold, and not being able to open the window sort of keeps 'India' out of the compartment, hopefully you will see what I mean if you're awake for the last hour of the journey to Udaipur. |

Dear Aussie,
There is also 2A Service in 9944 ADI-UDZ Express (Daily/MG). ------- If you go via ADI, you will be saving three hours, and also the c/o will be at a convenient hour; whereas via Kota, you will have to travel for 400 Kms. extra distance and also you cannot save any journey time, and the c/o at will be in the thick of midnight. ============== BCT-ADI-UDZ.....................790 Kms. (2933/9944/18 Hours) BCT-KOTA-UDZ.................1188 Kms. (2925/2963/21 Hours)(**thought of by you) ============== |

Thanks for your fantastic assistance - I'm changing my travel plans to go through Ahmedabad. Just about to try to book online and hope that I can manage the process. I've read a number of posts in the forum which I'm sure will make it a lot easier!! Getting really excited as I'm now within 60 days of travel ......
