I know a place Call Dagshai Hill Near Barog. Its an Calm and Quite Army Cantonment area and one the few places where chances of snowfall is high in January. Nearest Station "Dharampur". There are no hotels on the peak but Dharampur to Dagshai(or Kumarhatti to Dagshai from other side of Hill) in a vehicle will take just 10 minutes only. It also has a Big Residential School - Army Public School on the top with a huge football field. There is an Old British Era Jail on the top which is now converted into an Office but jail cells are still inside.

Barog is also a good place. Barog is between Dagshai and Solan. Solan is a big town. There is a beautiful hotel on the peak of Barog, Hotel Barog Heights which can be seen from Dagshai Hills. Another Good hotel is Hotel Pine View(Base of barog hill).

I stayed in Dagshai for 2 years. I am attaching some pics of Kasauli Hills taken from my house window.

TravelNik, the cottage is a big room, a big bath room (with a non functional bath tub) and a kitchen. It is not well maintained but because of the relatively high price it is often vacant. Sorry I did not click any pictures of the interior.

Delhiwala, I thought I would like to refresh my memory of the cutlets from time to time

Sarkar, thank you for sharing the information. Our Railcar stopped at the station named Kumarhatti Dagshai. Any other place like Barog on the route where one can find an accomodation?

How to book Shivalik Cottage?

Mridula, TravelNik,

Thanks for sharing this wonderful info about Shivalik Cottage and excellent photos!

We may have a weekend plan in a month's time around Delhi, so I am thinking why not Barog?

But I have a few queries as we would have 2 kids (6 mo and 18 mo).
  1. Presume this cottage is run by Railways itself? Would you have to book when you get down at the station, or you can pre-book?
  2. How did you find the weather there now (Jul 2009)? Would you have any idea if the cottage have any provision of room heaters etc?
  3. Is it decently clean and do they provide proper linens (important from the kids perspective)?
  4. Where did you have your food? Was it a long walk ? or there is some provision in/around the station area itself? Some details on that would be appreciated.
  5. I'm sure you felt safe around that area?
  6. How far is the HPTDC hotel or Barog Heights from this station? (Backup plan )

Many thanks once again...

P.S. The YouTube clip for Shivalik cottage & surroundings.

Hey .. nice clip on youtube indracal,
It gives a very good idea about the cottage and surrounding.
Most of the question you asked can be answered by mridula as she has just come from the same place.
cheers.. Enjoy your weekend.

  1. Presume this cottage is run by Railways itself? Would you have to book when you get down at the station, or you can pre-book?

You can prebook by calling at 01792238814. The cottage is usually empty because it costs 750 as opposed to three rooms priced at 100 rupees.

  2. How did you find the weather there now (Jul 2009)? Would you have any idea if the cottage have any provision of room heaters etc?

It rained for a while each day and at night I would need a light blanket.

  3. Is it decently clean and do they provide proper linens (important from the kids perspective)?

It is just about bearably clean by my standards but the linen needed a change. I told this to the station master while leaving and he said I should have asked for it in the beginning and they would have done it. The flush in the washroom didn't work, so we had to pour the water from a bucket, that was the biggest down.

  4. Where did you have your food? Was it a long walk ? or there is some provision in/around the station area itself? Some details on that would be appreciated.

There is food available at the station. By 9.00 pm though the station almost shuts down as the last train is gone by then.

There is a dabha too downhill but it is a little steep climbing uphill after lunch/dinner.

  5. I'm sure you felt safe around that area?

    It is very very safe.
  6. How far is the HPTDC hotel or Barog Heights from this station? (Backup plan )

Sorry about that one I always got conflicting answers. Some said 5 minutes walk, some said go up to the road and take a bus. No clue.

Hope this helps a little. Feel free to ask more questions if you have.

Many thanks once again...

P.S. The YouTube clip for Shivalik cottage & surroundings.

Oops - this means I wasn't attentive enough while reading it. I thought those 3 rooms are Shivalik Cottage

OK, I'm putting it as I understand, pls correct me:

We have 3 rooms costing 100 INR each per day, which has to be booked after you reach.

For the cottage, it is INR 750 /night and it has x number of rooms. (Mridula, please feel in This can be pre booked by calling the Stn Master. I presume the number you've provided is a Land line? Mobile nos. change too frequently for people!

No, you can book at the rooms at that landline numbers before hand. In fact the 100 rupee rooms are more in demand and would not usually be vacant if you just walked in.

The cottage has just one big room, one bath room and one kitchen (non-functional meaning no gas nothing). Feel free to ask questions that arise out of my answers

A caution on crossing the Barog Tunnel

We were walking inside the Barog Tunnel after being told there was no train for the next one hour. But midway through the tunnel a Railcar came! A shelter (arc in the tunnel inside which you can stand) was right at hand and the train crossed. But it was a scary experience. Video (of a train going into the tunnel not us) and a longer version of this incident is available on my blog.
