Sorry to budge in here. The railway rest house is perfectly situated and has the best views. The railway package run by the railways offer accomodation at this rest house. Barog has good rail curves and great walks around. Barog is a small village, I must say with 3-4 shops. HPTDC Pinewood hotel is a decent hotel with good rooms right on the main road. There is another property, Barog Heights which is situated on the hill top and has some amazing views of the valley.

Some day, I also plan to cross the Barog tunnel which happens to be the longest on the Kalka-Shimla track.

Barog station is one of the most beautiful stations and if I remeber right it had bagged several awards.
Staying at the retiring rooms there is an experience by itself... complete solitude. If you want to stay there enquire if they provide heaters since you will be there in winter.
At Barog town the HPTDC's Pinewood hotel is very good and you can expect discount in winter.
On a winter day I recommend walking along the tracks to either Solan or Kalka.

...and I took the road less travelled.

After raking my brains for long I think I will settle for Barog for an extended weekend trip. How can I book the railway guesthouse? Are there just two hotels pinewood and Barog Heights?

I am looking forward to this. Yippee!

Mridula,

There is a "Shivalik Cottage" at Barog Station. The road for it starts right where the engine stops. I dont know much about the cottage but I had the road and name-plate captured just in case someone might need it.

Check it out...

Thank you TravelNik, I stayed there over the weekend That is because all the 100 rupee rooms were booked. The number of the station master is 01792238814. I would suggest book as go as there are only three 100 rupee rooms and they are in big demand.

I came back yesterday night by Kalka Shatabdi so did not find time to upload my pictures. But there is one at my blog of the Barog Station.

But I will definitely come back to this thread with more. Thank you all, thank you Bhaswaran for letting me know that one can stay at the station. See I brought the number back for you.

Nice Pics Mridula,
In my next trip, I think I should plan atleast a day(+night) there.

Seems to be a lovely place. Also the view from cottage was amazing. Any view of cottage interiors ?
