Hello

I've done a lot of reading here, but need some local advice about travelling from Bangalore to Calicut.

Is the train the best way to do this? and if so would the best way be via Mangalore?

Or should be train to Mangalore and then drive to Calicut? (keep in mind this is our first time in INdia)

There are 4 adults and 2 children (2 and 7). We arrive on the plane late on a sunday evening and then need to be a Calicut by wednesday evening.

I'm guessing it might be a bit of a rush but once over this inital rush we have all the time in the world to do whatever we want until we leave India (again from Bangalore 16 days later... woo hoo!)

thanks in advance...

There is a weekly thrice train from Bangalore that leaves in the evening and gets to calicut early next morning. It is the cannanore express which has the following details. 6527 YPR CANNANORE E YPR 20.00 CLT 06.55on Mondays,Wednesdays and Saturdays. Yesvantpur is a rail terminal of bangalore. You can book online using www.irctc.co.in. You could use the same train for the return journey. Otherwise head to Mangalore and take the ovenight train.

calm, if you think you can live upto your moniker when it comes to travelling by road in India, then I would recommend hiring a taxi ( preferably a spacious and comfortable one like Toyota Innova) and driving down to Kozhikode(Calicut) from Bangalore. The route would be via Mysore, Gundalpet, Sulthan Bathery, Kalpetta or Mysore, Gundalpet, Gudalur, Nilambur (the latter is more scenic). You would be passing through Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary on the way ; one of the most picturesque stretches in south India.

The link below has a few pictures taken during the course of a road trip along this route :-

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...-nilambur.html

...both Yahoo and Google Maps has the details of the road network linking Bangalore and Kozhikode

http://in.maps.yahoo.com/#?lat=11.52...02759&z=9&ms=e

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=1...74,7.03125&z=8

It sure would beat a train journey and the distance and time involved isn't too much either.

Thank-you for the replies.

Thanks- YK I see that I was putting in the wrong information regarding the trains and that express train looks like a great option.

Wow 2cents those photos are just amazing - that looks like an adventure! But seriously are complete newbies to india up to this kind of trip? HOw long does it take by car and considering we have two children with us... where would you advise we stay the night on the way?

thanks

To Travel By Train To Calicut Is More Distance Travelled Than By Travelling By Bus, There R Lots Of Many Overnight Buses, (luxury Semi Sleeper) Which Ply To Calicut From Bangalor, By Train Means Its Going Via Coimbatore, If You Can Do The Day Bus Trip, Then You Can Have A Good View Of The Whole Nagarhole Sanctuary, Proably, It Would Be Nice If You Can Take A Halt In Wayand And From Wayand To Calicut Its Only 2 Hours

I am with 2cents on this. Bangalore-Calicut is an amazing drive and those pictures would look even more greener as the north-east monsoon season has kicked in. Here is a possible itinerary:

Start from Bangalore: 7AM
Reach Mysore: 9AM
Breakfast in Mysore
Mysore-Bandipur-Sultan Battery: 12:30PM
Tea/Snacks/Lunch(optional) in Sultan Battery
Sultan Battery-Vythiri-Calicut: 2PM

No need for an overnight stop here. You should be able to cover the distance in 7-8 hours, including breaks. There are plenty of coffee shops/eateries on the Bangalore-Mysore highway. After that it would be best to stock up snacks/beverages because there aren't too many stopovers in the Bandipur forests till you reach Wayanad/Sultan Battery.

The other option is to take a sleeper bus. These have sleeper berths and are good value for money. They generally leave bangalore at 9-10 PM and reach Calicut at 6AM next morning. You will not be able to catch any of the scenery as it is an overnight journey. Book your tickets at www.redbus.in

you can book online by going to www.ksrtc.in. and creating a user name and password if you want to skip the train. The train route from Bangalore to Mangalore is equally scenic. But the overnight train is very useful if you think you need to travel with small children .

Dear calm,

We arrive on the plane late on a sunday evening and then need to be a Calicut by wednesday evening.

##Perhaps, the 6527 Train should be comfortable, notwithstanding the fact that the Bangalore-Calicut Road is a scenic one.:-)

##Please have a look at the schedule of 6527:
...
You Queried For Train No Train Name Date Runs From Source Runs On
6527 YPR CANNANORE E 25/10/2008 YESVANTPUR JN MON WED SAT

SNo Stn Code Stn Name Route No. Arrival Time Dep. Time Distance Day Remark
1 YPR YESVANTPUR JN 1 Source 20:00 0 1
2 HSRA HOSUR 1 21:23 21:25 66 1
3 DPJ DHARMAPURI 1 22:58 23:00 159 1
4 SA SALEM JN 1 00:45 00:50 225 2
5 ED ERODE JN 1 01:45 01:50 288 2
6 PGT PALGHAT 1 04:15 04:20 430 2
7 SRR SHORANUR JN 1 05:05 05:10 474 2
8 TIR TIRUR 1 06:04 06:05 519 2
9 CLT CALICUT 1 06:55 07:00 560 2
.............................. ...........

##Can somebody indicate the distance by road, and also the journey time required with one or two stops enroute?

Both websites suggested for buses are saying there are no seats available... perhaps I am doing something wrong?

I'm also exploring the car option some more.... I really like the idea of a guide or a driver too! there are so many options.

Calicut and Kozhikode

You must have put the anglical name of calicut in the ksrtc bus. If you put kozhikode you should be fine. Just type mys and koz and choose the name that pops up. There are plenty of buses as per www.ksrtc.in. The AC bus [Airvath brand] leaves at 2200hrs. If you chose the slot 2000hrs to 2200hrs. Otherwise in the 1700hrs-2000hrs choose the rajahamsa brand. I am sure that you will sort it out. KSRTC seems to be more reliable from the payment gateway point of view, because it is a recognized government entity like IRCTC unlike redbus and other sites of that genre in my view.

Now that Qosmos has answered those queries of yours in detail, in case you do decide to go by road to Calicut I think it would be far more comfortable to travel with a 2 and 7 year old in a car than in a Bus. The flexibility a car journey entails has its advantages - if case you want to make frequent stops, go slow in certain stretches etc.

thanks 2cents. There are many pluses with having a car and being able to stop at our liesure is one. I must say I am a little nervous about doing it without a guide.

Is Bangalore to Calicut too far to have a driver? I like the idea of local knowledge etc...

calm, you wouldn't require the service of a guide if you are going to drive to Calicut without any side-trips or excursions on the way.

The drive from Bangalore to Calicut is not a very long one and as Qosmos listed in his post, even with frequent breaks on the way, you can reach Calicut in 7-8 hours. Most travel agencies/ tour operators offering interstate car service would probably have drivers who have experience driving along this stretch; and you can specifically request for one.

As you would have to pay for the up and down distance involved, you can always ask someone in Calicut to arrange a taxi from there, so that you can be picked up from Bangalore Airport and then driven back to Calicut.
