hi all

for anyone who might be interested, my train terminated at bandra terminus today (train was from jodphur) and just so people know, it look about an hour to get to colaba (staying at Shelley's) and the cost was 450r on the meter (all the cabs use meter's here).

hope that might be useful to someone somewhere!

uve been overcharged i guess, the cabbie must have manipulated the meter, or the meter was probably on long before u got in ,

make sure the meters turned after u pop in, the average fair from bandra to colaba comes around rs 200 and if its peak time and terrible traffic then rs 300 or so.

WOW!!! What a rip off!!! The meter must not be working properly or the fare card that he showed you was printed with fake rates!!! It can never go to that amount even if you went twice the distance that you travelled. Hope you don't get any such taxis in the future!!! A trick to avoid them playing truant with their meters or fare cards is to ask them how much it will be approximately and then go by the meter, if he is cheating you then the two will not match once you reach your destination. Hope you have a safe and enjoyable time in Mumbai now that you are here.

Check out my Mumbai page for things to do and see on my external website at

Hope this helps.

Sheer daylight robbery !

If you're planning on staying in Mumbai for a while and will be using taxis and autorickshaws often, I suggest you get hold of their tariff cards - easily available with pavement vendors in the Churchgate/D.N. Road area - and carry it with you.

Also, as mite recommended above, make sure that the meter is flagged up when you hire the taxi/auto and is flagged down only after you sit inside.

Auto Rickshaw Tariff in Mumbai

Taxi (Cab) Tariff in Mumbai

Keep this data handy with you if you are a tourist. All taxis/rickshaws here MUST go by the meter so if they try to negotiate with you before you board please refuse. You will find plenty of others who will honestly take you via meter.

As for a place to stay, Colaba can be pretty expensive. Try somewhere in the suburbs such as Bandra or Santacruz. The exact hotel will obviously depend on your budget and quality requirements.

Its should be less than 150 Rs May be he had tampered with the meter which i think is unlikely......

He might not have turned the meter when you sat in the Cab .........

That might be the problem

Keep in mind Cab guys keep a Fake fare chart just to fool tourists its better to keep your own fare chart with you hardly it costs 2Rs Iam sue u might get it in railway stations Wheelers and stationary stores in the cities...........

Smile Mobile application for Auto rikshaw and taxi fares for Mumbai (No tariff card req.)

Mobile application for Auto rikshaw and taxi fares for Mumbai (No tariff card req.)

Hi, These are the mobile softwares to get the Auto Rikshaw and Taxi Fares for Mumbai on your mobile handset (both day and mid-night). Depending on your handset download either jar or jad file or both. For nokia and many other phones it is sufficient to download jar file only. For other handsets download both the jar and jad file. This software shows the new tariff (since 24 June 2010) automatically as you type the meter number on your cell phone. These softwares are free of charge.
