Armed robbery on Varanasi-Mumbai train. First, this type of crime is extremely rare, there are a few times this has happened in unreserved carriages, normally in areas (and on trains) ulikely to see tourists, but the following incident seems more organised, and there's a good chance a railway employee on the train was involved. Eight armed robbers rob 30 passengers on Varanasi-Mumbai train. Nikhil S Dixit - Thursday, March 13, 2008 MUMBAI: The rhythmic motion of the train had lulled them into sleep. Suddenly, there was a screeching halt and some were jolted awake. Then, came the nightmare. Eight armed robbers, four among them in their teens, entered an air-conditioned three-tier sleeper coach of the Varanasi-Mumbai Ratangiri Superfast Express. They came from the adjoining sleeper coach, through the vestibule, said the victims. The gang looted 30 passengers — 20 of them from Mumbai — to the tune of Rs10 lakh, seizing everything they could lay hands on: cash, jewellery, mobiles, ATM cards. The incident happened around 1.30am on Wednesday, when the train was passing through an isolated wooded stretch between Shankargadh in Uttar Pradesh and Manekpur in Madhya Pradesh. Full story.

Not armed robbery, but I read a couple of days back that the biscuit bandits have turned to drugged bananas now.

It can be safely predicted that incidences of armed robbery on trains will increase, as the gap between rich and poor increases every year in India. Compared to the number of trains running in India it is still a small risk though. What is interesting though is that it happens often in Madhya Pradhesh. Probably in areas where it is easy to hide afterwards. It would be interesting to know whether the marriage group was selected when it boarded the train, or whether getting them was a mere coincidence.
