Are these trains feasible? Indian Railways have announced new NON STOP train services, connecting New Delhi with cities such as Chennai, Pune, Howrah, Allahabad and even Ernakulam. The minister did not mention any operational stoppages, for change of crew, loading of fresh food, cleaning up, re-filling the water for the toilets etc. A railway official has been quoted as saying: "The trains will, however, have technical stoppages at a few stations for facilitating staff and loco change but the "transit time will come down drastically ". If the trains do stop for some time between Delhi and Kerala, then why not allow passengers to get on or off the train? And if stoppages are allowed, these durantos will no longer be non stop! Is the concept of a really non stop, really long distance train flawed?

I believe these non-stop trains are for passengers who travel from one destination to another. You need to allow these technical stops - otherwise imagine toilets running out of water or supplying food to the passengers in the train or the crew getting tired. These stoppages will be for a very short duration and would benefit passengers travelling between the originating and destination station.

A side effect of such direct trains is that other trains, like the Rajdhanis and other "Superfasts" would move one step down in terms of priority and therefore experience extra delays sometimes, if the direct train for some reason is delayed a bit.

Dear Indizen, A railway official has been quoted as saying: "The trains will, however, have technical stoppages at a few stations for facilitating staff and loco change ##Correct. Except two, the remaining 10 will require Technical Stops which cannot be avoided. but the "transit time will come down drastically ". ##Not drastically, but only "slightly"!!! If the trains do stop for some time between Delhi and Kerala, then why not allow passengers to get on or off the train? ##This will be done at a later date. First of all, let the trains come into operation. ##If there are no commercial stops in between, the entire quota will be for end-to-end passengers only. Whether they will fill the entire rake or not is a question to be debated ONLY after the trains are introduced.

Now these are 14 The railways have announced the introduction of two more non-stop ‘Duranto’ trains — Delhi-Secunderabad and Delhi-Nagpur. Two of the 14 services will be started within a month. Trial runs have already been conducted on the Jammu to Delhi route.

sampark kranti [blr-del] was a non-stop when it first began, nearly a decade ago. it was a great 30+ hour ride to the destination. technical stops were on the platforms which were waay outside. one could disembark at them stops. however, no new passengers could alight. all tickets were from blr-del or vice versa... irrelevant where you got off. because nobody could alight - passenger flow was null and void. since then... there're 2 sampark kranti's. but with official halts. not the same train ride no more ![]() :brishti

Dear Brishti, ##The Karnataka SK was consuming around 37 Hrs when it was introduced. Now it is consuming 36 Hrs. ##The NZM-SBC Rajdhani itself consumes 33Hrs.!!!

What does Duranto mean? How will these trains be different to the original Sampark Kranti trains? Will they have new rakes? Will a single rake be used for the long distance routes, and a shared rake for some of the shorter routes? Why always Delhi?

These are meant to be non-stop journeys connecting important cities. A journey as long as Delhi-Chennai will require quite a few operational stops. The concept of the sampark kranti trains was to provide one train each to all the major states to connect them with the union capital. Stops outside the concerned state were avoided. For example, Bihar sampark kranti was not supposed to have stops in UP. But it has 3 stops in major cities like Lucknow. | |

Now that's a F-A-S-T train An article in the Deccan Chronicle, 11 September, print edition, about the new Duronto non-stop train service, reports that: "The Sealdeah-Delhi Duronto will be fully air conditioned and a fully reserved train and will cover the distance of 1,454 km in one-and-a-half hours, less than the corresponding Rajdhani running on the same route."
