Found this news article, which has led us to change our plans - and may be of interest to others if they are planning to do this journey:

Landslides owing to heavy rain along the train route between Vizag and Kirandul have forced the railway authorities to cancel the services for at least a month. The decision came after a damage was reported at the 80-metre railway bridge near Borra Caves on Friday evening owing to heavy rain, which the officials say is the first such incident in the last many years. Railway sources say that it would take nearly a month for the repairs.

We are not travelling for two months or so, however we were going to travel from Hampi to Vizag partially to go on this journey.

Rather than risk the disappointment if repairs last longer than planned (very possible, I would guess), we have re-routed whilst tickets are still available to other destinations, and we will spend travelling time elsewhere.
