Any Brits returning from India soon?
This is an unashamed plea to any Brits leaving India soon.
I need a 'special' package of white powder to be smuggled out of India. Well, not quite that serious. I would be eternally grateful is someone could bring a new 'Trains At A Glance' back from India. They are available from all the large train stations for Rs30, the new timetable started on the 1st July. Please let me know if you can help. |

Sorry, I'm not a Brit and I'm not returning soon, but I have a question/observation related to this topic.
I asked for the "Trains at a Glance" at Victoria Terminus in Mumbai from several stands during the last week of June, and all of them offered me a booklet called "Rail Dunya". At first I was skeptical, but then I bought it for 25 Rs, and it has been irreplaceable. It has detailed info on all trains, timetables, classes, prices per kilometers, etc. I've never seen a "Trains at a Glance" -booklet, but I'm guessing it's something very similar, if not the same, as the "Rail Dunya"? One guy at a newsstand said something about a new edition coming out in two months (end of August, I guess). On a darker note, there have been two serious railway accidents in the past two weeks, one on the Konkan route and another in Andhra Pradesh. The papers are saying that the money given to the railways to strengthen security is being used for other purposes...? |

Rail duniya is a stripped down version of it . Its more of a magazine sort of thingy which contains descriptions /timing of all the major trains and train routes .
The only thing which you might not even notice is the fact that a lot of small stations will be not be mentioned . Just in case u're intrested ...try and get the big daddy of 'em all ..The Indian Bradshaw ...its kinda rare ...but it has the name of every small station on route . Its good fun ...to while away time on the journey ..enjoy the scenary ...and keeping track of which village has just passed by .. |

Does anyone know when the new ‘Indian Bradshaw’ will be published?
How much would it cost including postage to London? I asked on another site for, 1 x Indian Bradshaw, 2 x Trains at a glance, All the Regional Timetables. I was quoted Rs 6500 (inc postage). Is this reasonable? |

Does.nt seem very reasonable to me Steve, I guees you are needing all this stuff to fufill your new role here at Indiamike??
Just something I thought of, there was an offer on the net at some point this year of a CDrom from trains at a glance or India rail, That was priced at $ 36 some what cheaper and a bit more user friendly??. I have been looking for this myself but as yet have'nt found a distributer!! I actually saw the darn thing in Trivandrun last year and foolishly thought ah well I can pick it up later!! Well I could'nt find it again, so if you should come across it any of you please let me know too |

The CD-Rom you saw was probably the same one AlanD brought me back from India, it costs Rs100 from most big bookshops in India, It’s brilliant for finding branch lines but ultimately flawed and unreliable, a real pity considering the computing ability of so many Indians.
I can’t imagine someone could try and sell a Rs100 CD-Rom for $36, so maybe there is a more advanced version out, if I find out anything I will do a post about it. I stopped adding to the ‘train information’ post, as I couldn’t be sure of giving out the correct information. This is why I would like both the Indian Bradshaw and the Regional Timetables, Just to double check information before posting, the ‘Trains at a glance’ are extremely useful for most journeys, I could do with many copies of that as I’m asked for it quite a few times. |

Might not be the answer you want Steve (although at least it will get your thread back up to the top of the page!) but the IRFCA site has loads of links to IR publications, for example.
In fact it was this site you put me on to where I got my classic IR screen saver that pops up here every so often when I go to fill my wine glass or whatever. It is a great site with loads of nerdy lists of the surviving steam railway engines in India etc. Would love to do a tour to see them all! Good luck with the timetable. It came out new on 1/7/03 as I am sure you know. Hope you get it soon; it is an excellent publication. |
