Alwar to Agra by train?

Hello - The information on this site is great!

However I'm still having problems finding a train from Alwar to Agra (maybe I need to head to Jaipur first?). I'm staying at this hotel - Fort Hill Kesroli (lavish, but it's our honeymoon!) Village Kesroli, via M.I.A., District Alwar - 301 030, Rajasthan, India and we need to get to our hotel just outside Taj Mahal in Agra on April 9th (2006). Since we have a hotel booked for the 9th - something that doesn't take all day and gets us to the hotel by 17:00 or 18:00 is preferable.

Thank you so much for the help!

Joanne

I think your best bet is to take a direct road trip to Agra from Alwar as Alwar is some what midway between Delhi and Jaipur. If you want to visit Jaipur then you could take a train (or car) to Jaipur and then take a train from Jaipur to Agra.
Agra to Jaipur 232 Km.
Alwar is 150 Km from Jaipur and 170 Km From Delhi.
Alwar to Agra 172
You can see mapsofindia.com
Another problem with travelling by train is the time spent in going to the station and finding a way to get to the hotel. If you take a direct car from Alwar to Agra it will be faster and effecient and will get you to you hotel in Agra. April will be hot in Rajasthan and though an Air conditioned car may be expensive if you book from the hotel it may be worth it. with the heat and the not so good road conditions a bus ride is not recommended.

Dear joan,
There used a direct train between Alwar and Agra but this has been re-routed. There are only few passenger trains that take you to Mathura Jn. and again another train from Mathura Jn. to Agra.
-----
Hence, as suggested by Mr.K.Mishra, you please undertake Road Journey between Alwar and Agra.
----
But from Agra to Jaipur, you have 9778 Intercity Express - a less crowded train:-

Thanks for the help! Sounds like a road trip is the best bet - any idea what that should cost?

How are you reaching Kesroli? Are you taking a taxi to Kesroli? If you are, then you can check for the overnight charges for the driver and keep the same taxi with you in Kesroli (if you are staying for a day or two) and use the same taxi go to Agra.

Taking a taxi from hotels is always expensive. An Airconditioned taxi to Agra from Kesroli should cost approximately Rs. 3500 (as told by someone...no first hand experience). If you plan to go to Jaipur and take a train from Jaipur to Agra the taxi to Jaipur will cost Rs 2500 and then the rail fare to Agra. So cost will be almost the same but you will also be spending more time travelling.

Public transport is always cheaper than a taxi but in India it is not as organized and may not be convinient since Alwar is a small town and does not have much infrastructure. I am sure that the town would have a bus station which runs regular buses to agra for Rs 100 or even less. If you can tolerate the heat and chaos (and other not so nice stuff) you can take a bus to agra.
