Any simple (or even complicated) way to do it?

The simplest way is an overnight bus. This goes directly between the cities. There are 2- 3 buses with around 30 mins between the timing of each. There are sleeper buses doing this i.e. they have sleeping berths (if you are tall, not so good, they seem to be a bit on the shortish side).
One alternative is train to Jodhpur, then bus or train to Jaisalmer.

Ahmedabad Jodhpur Jaisalmer
If you want to travel by train you will need to go via Jodhpur the following seems to be the best connection.
Ahmedabad Jn. » Jodhpur Jn. 2480 SURYANAGARI EXP Dep 21.50 Arr 06.30 08.40 Jodhpur » Jaisalmer 4810 JU JSM EXPRESS Dep 23.00 Arr 05.00 06.00

Thank you, Aishah and LunavadaLad,
The train connection is probably a bit more unwieldy than I would like. Aishah - about that bus - when you say "tall," what do you mean? Also, how comfortable are they? I'm taking my wife and 18-year ol daughter along and I'd rather not submit them to my idea of "roughing it." |

Coincidentally my husband and nephew are currently setting out tonight. They find the sleepers fine and their heights are around 5ft9" and 5ft 11" I think. Anything over that might not be the best. Since both of them can sleep anywhere at the drop of a hat, including on the ground, I don't think they would be good judges for you!
Stories I have heard is that taller people have had to 'sleep' in a half-sitting position in order to get their packs in as well. If you want your luggage inside the bus, that will make your berth smaller. The bus also sways around as buses do, so if you can take that then you will be alright. Personally, the most comfortable option is the train to Jodhpur, (see if one is going overnight to arrive early morning there), then take a push-back seat private bus to Jaisalmer. The bus journey is around five to five and a half hours. Or else do the overnight train. |

Thank you, Aisha.
I think that it may be more of an "adventure" than my wife and daughter signed on for. I'm pulling in my horns (a colorful but probably not a universal idiom) and thinking about just going to Zainabad (by the Little Rann in Kutch). I'll post elsewhere, but do you happen to be familiar with it? |

I have to confess in my 10 years of living here I have never been to Gujurat - so sorry no. A friend of mine has and I have a feeling she has been in that area and enjoyed it.
