After travelling from Pathankot to Varanasi in one go- such along time think around 34 hours. After that decided to split journey up from Tritchy to Aurangobad, first night to Madaras, next night to Hydrabad and last night Aurangobad. We Spent the day in both places going around the town.
The 3 seperate tickets were arranged in Tritchy with confirmed berths (SL) if remember right the price of ticket was fromTrichy to Auranabad and not 3 seperate tickets. Made life much easier, that is if you have the time to spend

I am taking the same train on dec 22 around 36 hours of journey and return i am taking the 50 hours train from patna to bangalore.
