A Guide to the India Railway System and the Indian Train

I’m sharing my practical knowledge about the India railway system, the Indian train, and the India travel ‘culture’. The information in this article covers what to expect when traveling on the India Railway system (as well as what not to expect), types of Indian train classes, India railway facilities, cost of travel on Indian trains, and instructions on making offline and online India Railway reservations.

Rajdhani express toilets

I travelled in 3 tier Rajdhani express to delhi and changed in the bathroom. I have a query if it's safe to use the bathrooms for changing your dress?

Search for a bathroom with a completely dry floor, I've changed a few times where there's a wet floor (and done the same many times in showers in the upper class waiting rooms at stations) and it's a real pain trying to put trousers on when the floor is wet, think about it.

Garib Rath- PAID BED ROLLS

I have booked a ticket in 12882 Garib Rath Express from Puri to Howrah with the date of Journey on 31 October, 2016. I opted for bed rolls in the e-ticket and paid for the same for all the passengers. Now Is it true that even though they charge for providing bedding, there may not be sufficient bedding available and after boarding the train, the situation is like that the first you go, the first you get ! If Yes or if even No, where exactly to approach for the rolls? Are there any coach attendants who will be distributing?
Please help.

Prebooked beddings are supplied in the train at the passenger's berth...

There would be a dedicated team for the purpose.

Thanks for all the information, but i don't understand.

I want to book tickets from:

Delhi to Agra 13th december (early departure)
Agra to Udaipur 14 december (late departure)

https://www.cleartrip.com/trains/search: "Oops! There are no trains available for this particular route and class with us"

In every single search.

Can someone help?

Hi,

Use this entry on Cleartrip.

You need a registration at the IRCTC before one can book trains. Nowadays they accept foreign credit cars so it makes no sense to use cleartrip.

For connections an availability erail and etrain are good sites.

Check if the class you are selecting is available in the train.

The best option is to select All Classes while searching a train. It helps in choosing options.

For an early departure from Delhi to Agra, the best trains are the Bhopal Shatabdi (dep 06.00/arr 07.57) and the Gatimaan Express (dep 08.10/arr 09.50). The Shatabdi leaves from New Delhi station, the Gatimaan from Nizamuddin. Both arrive at Agra Cantt. Railway station and carry two classes of accommodation - Executive Class (EC) and AC Chair Car (CC).

There is only one sensible train option from Agra to Udaipur which is the Khajuraho-Udaipur Express. It leaves Agra Cantt. at 18.00 to reach Udaipur City station at 06.35 the following morning. It has four reservable classes of accommodation - First AC Sleeper (1A), Second AC Sleeper (2A), Three-tier AC Sleeper (3A) and Non-AC Sleeper (SL).

Try searching with these specific stations and class choices, these results should come up. Also, Cleartrip cannot access reservation availability between 08.00 - noon IST and 23.45 - 00.20 IST, so make sure you're searching for tickets outside these timings.

I'll try to explain Cleartrip without any bad language or contempt.

OK, lets try again.

The good news is, they's had their IT department make significant changes to their user interface, and it looks really nice, they've also managed to remove airports from the list of options for each city, but that's where the good news ends.

If there were more than one station in a city, there used to be a 'all stations' option, that's gone, in reality, it wasn't needed, as long as all the stations in that city were linked in the software. (so whatever station you selected for travel from Delhi to Agra, you'd see the results for all stations, in other words, all the trains that travel from Delhi to Agra)

The good news is, they've linked nearly all the Delhi stations (not Delhi Kishanganj), but they've not done the same for Agra, so if you search for trains from New Delhi to Agra Fort, you'll only find one train, you need to search to Agra Cant.

Your Agra to Udaipur example shows why not linking a city's stations doesn't work, for many years all trains heading west (as the Udaipur train does initially) departed from Agra Fort station, and that would be the station you'd search from (and you'll find one poorly timed train running once a week from Agra Fort), but the well timed overnight train runs from Agra Cant.

If they've not done it for Agra, then at best they've only linked the stations in the very biggest cities, and that is a disaster for rail users as more and more cities use 2, 3, 4 or even more stations.

Cleartrip have also done away with the 'all class' option, so you'll carefully consider what class you want, then search, and find they list every bloody train whatever class it has (so forget using class as a way to filter the train list).

There's a really nice pop-up appears when you click on the train name, it lists all the stations the train calls at, unless it's a lot of stations, nobody actually checked it to see if it worked.
