How is the 2nd class seating on the mumbai - goa train? I can't remember the train name but it arrives at madgaon about 14.10 I think... It will be my first train journey in India so if it's hard going I'd prefer to get the Mandovi express in a 2 tier AC sleeper and arrive in Goa a bit later... I read in another thread that the 2nd class seating on the train is reserved and padded seating and wondered if this is true? Obviously as it's a scenic journey I'd like to be able to look out the windows...

probably you talking about 2051 Janshatabdi express which leaves from Mumbai CST 5:10 & reaches Madgaon 14:10 ... yes 2S seating is reserved & padded (but no AC) on this train ... if you want AC then you can book CC(AC chair car)class of this train ...

CC is booked up for the day I want to travel, the 2S seating does actually sound ok for this train... and it's much much cheaper... only problem is my boyfriend will have arrived at midnight and there doesn't seem much point in him getting a hotel for 5 hours... or even less, allowing for travelling to the station. All very confusing!!

We travelled by non A/c Jan Shatabadi from Mumbai (panvel) to Goa (margao) in Jan last year - BAD IDEA. when passing through the (many) tunnels on this route we were forced to breathe a cocktail of diesel fumes - which made us really sick. so turned off were we with trains that we flew back to mumbai at the end of our stay in goa. that said, i should mention that i have traveled extensively on trains in india and doing so by non-ac is a fantastic experience which i will do again as long as there are no tunnels to go through

5 hours off the plane, then 2S for 8 hours.....a bad idea in my opinion.

2S is comfortable, but tight, and I think it becomes slightly hard work after 3-4 hours, and a bloody pain as you approach 6 hours (I got off after 6 hours as I'd had enough).

However, I wasn't having a good day, my ipod wasn't working and I'd had enough of the "what country" kind of questions and wasn't feeling very sociable, I know other members have enjoyed this journey in 2S though, so don't let my experience influence your decision.

Will your boyfriend have had a long journey to get to Mumbai?
Can he sleep on a plane?

If he can't, he may be very tired for this train trip and he'll find it harder to sleep on the train than it was on the plane, and if this is the case, 2A on the Mandovi will seem like heaven in comparison.

Sounds like a bad way to "enjoy" a country. Like Steven says stressing it gets long..

To be honest Steven's reply sounds most realistic. I reckon we'll get the Mandovi express in 2 tier AC, it'll just be less gruelling... I really don't know what state he'll be in after a long flight and it's probably better to arrive in Goa later rather than have a horrible train experience after no sleep! Thanks for your help

Remember that the Jan Shatabdi express is a low-cost Shatabdi: the RyanAir of the Indian Railway!

so 2S seating is a little tighter than normal with 3x3 instead of a 2x3 layout and NO RECLINE.

That aside, the Jan Shatabdi is the fastest way to reach Goa from Mumbai and with fares around 20% cheaper. Another big plus, is that this train halts at many stations enroute which are a fantastic to explore: like Chilpun and Ratnagiri for eg. which many westerners just pass on!

PS: There IS a Air conditioned chair car attached to the Jan Shatabdi.

Yes ! You should go for the AC coach, it'll be more comfortable.

We took the janshatabdi in 2006 from Mumbai to Goa in Oct-end...
At about 10am, my wife had to upgrade from 2nd sleeper to AC... i'm a die-hard fan of trains, so i stayed on...

I would totally advise against this journey in 2S or even sleeper class for a first time Indian train journey... the train is pulled by a Diesel engine and there are numerous tunnels on the way where the whole compartment fills up with smoke...Go slow and break yourself gently into Indian trains by travelling AC here...

I don't think this train has sleeper class .I guess this train has AC chair car & 2nd class seating only.

Yeah ! That's right. Shatabdis/Jan Shatabdis have no sleeper class as they are essentially short distance trains only.

i know... Shatabdi/Jan-shatabdi's have no sleeper class... I was telling shinyhappyharriet to avoid sleeper class if she picks another train since CC in Janshatbdi is booked...
Try the 3AC on Mandovi express... or even Konkan Kanya express (it has about 5 hours in daylight)...

Jan Shatabdi GOA - Mumbai 2052

I have booked my return journey with the Jan Shatabdi CC, after booking when I read lots of review about this train and most of them were negative as very dirty train, same time charging for food separately even while web booking it was asked specifically about food choice Veg/Non veg.

I will appreciate as I am travelling is the month of July, if some one can post recent condition of the train and possible the picture of inside the train.

While going to GOA I have booked Konkan Kanya, and this train being appreciated lot, your reviews are welcome.
