What's your Favourite Fruit?
The mango season has started. The Alphonso Mango, locally called Haapuss is currently available at Rs 250 per dozen. This variety is grown only in the narrow coastal strip called the Konkan Coast upto Goa. (coast of Maharashtra but could include South Gujarat & Goa). It is indescribably sweet with a metallic taste. It was named after the Portuguese Governor of Goa Alphonse Albuquerque.
Its my all time favourite fruit. Once I ate only haapuss for three months with a cup of cow's milk morning & eve. Nothing else at all. I ate as many mangoes as I could throughout the day. Within twenty days I was smelling of haapuss & my urine may have been tasting of haapuss. (did I hear sum'un say haa piss!! )
I was trying to follow an Ayurvedic method to rejuvenate the body. The original method called for eating Grapes as much as you want (and nuthin else). I didn't fancy grapes all that much. So I made it into a Mango Kalpa just becuz I liked mangoes (here kalpa means newly constructed body cells)(the original Ayurvedic term is kaayaa kalpa which means "new body")
I dont know whether my cells got reconstructed with mango pulp. If sum'un had bitten me during those days, sum'un would have discovered wierd tasting human flesh. Only guy who could have given an actual comparison was Idi Amin. I hadn't heard about his flesh-eating exploits those days else I might have asked him.
My question: (lets hear some wacky &/or bizarre answers)
What's your favourite fruit? If you were given a choice of hundreds of fruits of all varieties, which one would you pick first? Second? Third?
For me.... the haapuss is first. Litchi is second. Elaichi bananas (the small yellow ones with thin skins) & Bel a joint third.
What about y'all?
For yer info, my sister's father-in-law today complained that he bought beautiful-looking, uniformly coloured, big-sized, shiny-shiny bananas in Los Angeles............ only to discover that they tasted like chalk. Has anyone here eaten chalk?

The Universe is an ellipsoid?... or a Spheroid?? If the sphere smiles... it becomes an ellipse. This IS Creation.

after much thought, I have come to an unlikely conclusion on my favorite fruit:
the lowly "orange" of India. here in USA, they would be called tangerines, but whatever. They are not to be confused with "sweetlimes." Yeah, alphonse mangoes are awesome, papayas get all that white rice moving thru ya, and a fresh picked fall apple IN manali is superb. but consider . . .
Oranges seem to be available all year, and all over India. They carry well in one's daypack, provide quick energy, do not spoil you appetite for that huge tali you're looking forward to for lunch, have a high water content, seem to have a cooling effect, and clean out your mouth of beedi breath!
If I have a sixer of bananas and a kilo of oranges at the start of the day, I know I can face anything Ma India can throw at me.
All praise to the orange!

Mango was good but actually I didn't like fruits from India. Orange juice was not so good, among others. I found better fruits in Europe. And to be sincere, I like most fruits from South America, the most juicy, tasteful, etc.
My favourite fruit of all time is the little red ones on a prickly pear tree. They're a bit of a pain to get to and not available in stores, though.
After that I love pomegranates (juiced), lychee, and mandarins.
Mmmm!

Quote:
I did some search on the Net and found a more common (American?) name for it - persimmon. Persimmon, "Food of the Gods"
If you bite into a piece of fruit that looks like an orange tomato and your lips pucker because of the bitter taste, you may be chewing on an unripe persimmon.
There are hundreds of varieties of persimmon, but two types are commercially available. The Hachiya dominates with about 90% of the market. It is an astringent fruit, bright orange in color, and shaped like a large, slightly elongated tomato that almost comes to a point at the bottom. Hachiyas must be fully ripe to be enjoyed. Fully ripe means a mushy, intense orange, jelly-like texture that is a turnoff for many people. The taste is compared to that of an overly sweet apricot with a smooth, slippery texture.
The Fuyu, also bright orange in color, is a non-astringent variety slowly gaining in popularity. It is eaten when firm, just like an apple, shiny skin and all. You can recognize a Fuyu by its squat shape and flat bottom, close to the appearance of a medium-sized tomato.
Some persimmons will begin to appear in the markets in late September, but November and December are when they're most plentiful. In some areas availability may even stretch into January.
Note. In Uzbekistan I remember buying them in April!! started missing Tashkent...
