Sacrilege! Hyderabadi Biryani with Chole!

But, never mind, whatever works for you Vandy!

My lunch today was super spicy Telangana style basic mutton curry with baghara (spiced-fried) rice.

First time I am hearing Hyderabadi biriyani and Chole combination ..

But as Hyderabadi rightly pointed out, nothing is wrong or right . It all boils down to how much we enjoy..

Velu, I love Chettinadu cuisine and have also mentioned elsewhere on the site about how much I used to enjoy the food at Sri Gajendra Vilas in Chennai (used to be near Parry's), scalp sweat bringing dosa and idli with chicken curry. Not sure if this place still exists, it used be a favourite haunt of the famous Chennai auto wallahs and taxiwallahs. Most crowded after midnight.

How is the Cauvery Delta cuisine different? I assume that more 'wet' spices are used here as opposed to Chettinadu cuisine using mostly dry spices? Or, am I confusing the both?

Hyderabadi Biryani with what meat? Or Veg? Combination with chole is not appetizing, IMO.

Also Hyderabadi Biryani doesn't have Peas in it. It should have meat/chicken, preferably meat.

this is more of a punjabi style of biryani try having chicken curry and raita with this you will love it.

(NOTE:ALWAYS HAVE CURD ITEM WITH BIRYANI TO CUT DOWN THE HEAVY SPICES.

I am not an Expert in these things Hyderabadi. Chettinad food is extremely famous and popular Cuisine . In My region, Non-Veg gravy / Kulambu by default means "Almost Red Color" with lots and lots and lots of chillies (Red Hot chillies) and rarely we could taste anything (Whether it's chicken or Mutton or Fish) as the extreme Hot gravy will make us Sweat and by default we will be in "Tears" at the end of the food.After several years out from my place nowadays we are getting used / preparing Neutral food (Still whenever Guests try it out , they feel it's bit sooo hot)

BTW I tried the chettinad hotels of Chennai Anjappar or arasappar or Velu Military hotel but nothing is atleast 25% hot as what I am used to and the closest "Hot Food" I feel is "THE ANDHRA FOOD " . Especially in Tamilnadu-Andhra border (Nagari / Puttur / Oothukottai ) and Cuddapah / Guntakkal Region. In Hyderabad high-end and Musalman hotels serve Tasty best-in-class food (Whatever limited places I tried) rather than hot food. May be it all lies with "Home made food" Nowadays.

Thanks for the tip on "Gajendra Vilas" . I never tried till now and coincidentally I am Visiting chennai this week end. I will try it out.

Vandy, that looks absolutely delicious and Im sure it was.

Hats off to you and your Mrs for all your Indian cookery efforts.

Any more experiments with dry mango and sweetmeats?



Today for a change, for lunch we just had a spicy egg, cheese and chilly sandwich in a garlic roll, with chilled buttermilk with lots of curry leaves in it. Fed up of regular daily spicy food and the weather was rather warm.

Vandy plse don't post pics, unless you are gonna share the food. I don't want the Punjabi Chhole - Fried Eggs but the Hyderabadi Biryani looks great.

As for me had a veg thali today.

Breakfast here, so sausages and toasted baguette with peanut butter and blueberry jam.
All accompanied with a few mugs of chai made from whole spices. I make a pan-full every weekend morning.
