Ok, people, I have one question: is it necessary to only eat vegetarian food? Or eating meats is ok??

I'm asking because of the danger of contamination...some people told me that it's only safe to eat vegetarian food....

What do you think?

you sure can eat non veg stuff... but make sure its from a decently good place.

though its best to avoid red meat (and stick to chicken or duck) and fish .... the problem being - a risk of getting delhi-belly-ish (esp. on the latter).

prawns are also fishy

I loved the sugarcane juice in Bombay!!, no ill effects though, surely something that tastes that good can't be bad for you , and the pani puris (sp?). The vadais in kerala and idlis and sambar and coconut chutney. I totally fell in love with lime pickles, I think I had far too much with each meal and had a touch of heartburn for a number of days while in Delhi.....

it has been reported that pesticides that go into production of vegetables has its ill effects in the long run - and then there are the colors applied on external surfaces of vegetables to make them look more fresh. one hasto be careful of practically all foodstuffs.

tadka:
let me explain the phenomenology of CTM here:
C & T: marvellous deboning of chicken and morsels are in perfect shape and size, the most basic marination used and then cooked in tandoor on skewers
M: the basic masala sauce is actually the curry which is elsewhere also used in variations
The crux is that CTM has all the fine basics of indian cuisine and C can be replaced with any veg or meat ingredient; top it all CTM can be easliy eaten using cutlery or hand.
Finally: it tastes just wonderful anywhere in the world. i think its the most perfected and best replicated indian dish in the west. its the only dish it never lets one down in the west when it comes to indian cuisine.

It would be near impossible to choose one dish from the whole of india.. here is wot i think:
1. In areas surrounding Delhi: Tandoori Chicken
2. In the coastal areas in southern part of india: simple fish fry!
3. If in Andhra pradesh, then Hyderabadi Biryani
4. Other interiors of southern india, masala dosa.
5. Fish curry in Bengal.
6. Bhelpuri in and around Bombay
... and so on..

In a country where the taste of water changes every 10 miles, its impossible to have one "BEST" dish...
