Turmeric root... ?

I bought some tumeric root from the Indian grocery store and am wondering how you use it, in what, and how much. Thanks!

Why on earth did you buy turmeric root. You could make a paste out of it, and useit instead of turmeric powder in cooking. Mild you, it can be a bit pungent compared to the powder, so go easy. You can also use the paste as a face pack, mixed with cream and other stuff. Never seen it being used for anything else. Sorry.

if you are wondering about how to use it in food, then you have ground it and make powder out of it...

This powder is used in Indian Currys and other things for Yellow color..

It has excellent medical properties..when someone is hurt then a spoon of the powder is mixed in warm milk and the person is made to drink that..

is there anything more indian than turmeric?!

it seems to have an infinite number of culinary/medicinal/religious/cosmetic uses - i guess not even the northern european love story with potatoes can rival this one!

you could use it to dye your feet and legs on fridays? it's popular with the local womenfolk round here...

Some of the more-traditional women here put turmeric on their faces: it gives their skin an orange colour!

Lightbulb Turmeric connection to Indian marriage

The morning of the marriage day we have a ritual with the Turmeric. It is known as Gatro-horidra (outer body - turmeric). In the Boy's house the turmeric paste mixed with Mustard oil is put all over the body by the married women of the famly. They also play and put the same on each other (like a mini Holi-color festival). Then the rest of the paste is sent to the girl's house with a lot of gifts. In the girls house the have the same ritual then. It has got two meaning 1). first to use the antibacterial proven character of Turmeric and then to make the skin color a little lighter (which all the ppl of India inherently cherish for).
The major use of Horidra in India is mostly for cooking and for medicines. If you have nothing to do. just put on the grinding stone and use the paste with some salt with warm rice in the beginning of your Lunch. it will kill if you have worm in your stomach. otheriwse mix with some mustard oil and masage all over your body. it will give you a golden glow for somedays. Instead of your faded white skin.. that is more attractive.

For more information on Turmeric (Horidra) you can read the chapter 'Holud' of the Book "Mistress of Spices" By Mrs. Divakaruni. Who is quite famous writer among the foreign readers.

We were born that way!

Yes, it is very sad... but most learn to live with it. We even come to find each other attractive!
