tobacco [zarda] is what is harmful in paan.
them who have it - have to spit it out... thats what makes it disgusting - not the paan. that is carcinogenic... and yes, the jaw gets affected. this is also because them folks have a tendency to store the tobacco in the jaw for a period of time. a mitha paan after a meal - yup - its good for digestion and for smokers its the ultimate ending of a great meal ![]() as for it being an 'acquired taste' sure - but then again, so is a mcdonalds cheeseburger. :brishti |

I'd read that the betel nut itself is also carcinogenic, and that when used in combination with tobacco, it's much more harmful than each separately.
(Can't find the original article that mentioned the combination, but here's one about betel.) |

my teeth are perfect - so were my grandmothers... must be the genes!
she never brushed her teeth as we know it - she used to clean her teeth with her finger using the leftover ashes of the coal in the 'chula' [ indian mud oven ]. not a single cavity - all her teeth in tact - till she went away. grandmom had the paan-dani - where she kept all the ingredients of making paan, because my grandfather had to have a paan after every meal [ sans zarda ]... it is good for digestion! he too had sparklers, sans cavity and all 34 till the end. so... perhaps nayan or jyotida can elaborate this paan-dani a bit more. .. and the intricacies. its akin the japanese tea ceremony :brishti [ yup paan does doth stain the teeth - just remembered a couple of folks ] Last edited by brishti : Sep 23rd, 2008 at 19:45. Reason: remembering teeth stains |
