Mira4bai4, you said "I am known as a bore.!!!!"
NOT SO friend! If people knew about what alluminium pans also did to the system, they wouldn't go anywhere near them also! (Not to mention aspertame either!) ![]() |

![]() No, I'm not about to come up with some obscure Anise health risk ---just that I loathe the stuff!Aluminium is back in fashion, by the way, so it must have been something else that got our brain cells. I never could see the point in non-stick pans: a well seasoned steel pan is non-stick and will last for ever! (as long as it is not placed in the mouth and sucked slowly!

Best Pan
In Varanasi, having tried a few, the best pan that I have had is with a small shop in the University campus. The guy's name is Bhairav (I hope he is still there when I visit again). Interstingly, he used leaves from South India that are softer and melt easily for guys like me.
This is saying a lot since Varanasi is one of the best places for paan in India. |

Have been reading this book and throughout it "Palung-Tode Paan" keeps getting mentioned. What is this type of Paan?
Also regarding this thread. What are we discussing here:- Paan or Pans??? |

Palung / Paalang - means Bed Tode - means to break Palung-Tode - means "something that helps to break the bed" And yes, Paan is better spelt with two "a"s. |

I can't believe that the recreational enjoyment of sweet paans on an Indian holiday would result in cancer or any other unfortunate outcome. Let's be reasonable. All this talk is reminding me of that incredible explosion of powerful flavors when one first bites into a fresh sweet paan. I can hardly wait to get back there to experience it again!

But at least in Kumbakonam, one does see it being used a lot; just plain leaf+lime types. not paan unless of course that too is also counted as paan.

Paan
I live in the U.S. and I very much miss the food from India, as do all of you who have been! Of course there are Indian restaurants throughout the U.S., some good and some terrible. What I want to know is if anyone has run across Paan in the U.S. or in any other countries outside of India, and was it any good? Thanks.

Hi.. I personally have seen only the dehydrated paans..no paan walas, but it's been years since I've been to NYC, D.C., L.A. I'm guessing probably Houston would have some.
I have eaten fresh sweet paan in Toronto.

I live in Queens, NY and we have several paan walas in Jackson Heights (Queens). We had a sampling at our IM meetup last weekend. They have all the ingredients that you would find in India, Baba Zarda, beetle nut, etc. The sweet paan is excellent here. If you want some let me know and I'll find out if they will ship it to you.
