Those shiny red apples

Was having a conversation the other day with a colleague in office on how we in India now have access to lovely fruit from all over the world (i especially flip over those shiny red applesa from NZ)...

Many of you may we aware, but i was ignorant on this front and thought of sharing it with others like me... these apples are heavily coated with an edible wax to get them so enticing...

as a note of caution... peel of the skin before eating, or wash the apple really well with hot water to get the wax out... the apples should be scrubbed well in hot water.. today i jsut poured hot water over the apples and did not scrub them.. after the apples dried there was a white coating on the apple (wax / chemicals / god knows what else...) so you need to scrub them well...

take care....

Apples and oranges are OK, at least you can peel them. You can get sick from eating grapes. They are so heavily coated with pesticides.

I read somewhere that grapes absorb a lot of the pesticide, too.

When I told my wife about the hot water and the apples, she said, but they will get cooked

Some times you may see whitish things on grapes, specially the red big ones. These are natural yeast.

I have also noticed the wax like shine on the imported apples. Rubbing vigorously with tissue helps to remove the wax and save the apples from being cooked. Dear Capt reading this?????

Yeah.

Thing is, those apples are almost the only crisp ones you get. Many of the others feel like potatoes.

Some American apples that we get in Delhi these days are better than the NZ stuff, more crunchy.

The apples are not great, anyway, I'm afraid. Often pretty dull and flavourless.

Better than nothing, though. After my attack of severe nausea for 48 hours this week, I found that apple was the only thing I could eat!

ISTR that a friend of mine in UK leaves all such fruit to soak in a bowl of water with a little detergent added to it to help get rid of these waxes.

Sadly, I expect this will be the next wave of retailing here: never mind the taste, look at the nice waxy shine! And the poor pavement fruit seller won't be able to sell her fresh, but slightly scruffy, apples.

But hey! This country has been throwing away the nutritious part of rice and living on a staple diet of starchy sludge for a very long time .

Capt... you must get some pretty awful potatoes! They are supposed to be good and solid.

I just planted three apple trees in my yard and am looking forward to have my own abundant (unwaxed) supply in a couple of years! (Will bring some to Delhi for you, Jyoti Da, when the trees start bearing. )

I hope my third visit will take place within the next year -- long before the apple trees are bearing! So you may have to wait till my fourth visit to get the apples. Until then, you'll have to settle for some other American foodstuffs: wild rice, maple syrup, cranberries, maybe some blueberries ... Actually, I plan to plant some blueberry bushes later this month, too!
