The great sarson conspiracy?

Does anyone have any reaction to the information on this 2001 link:

http://www.tattvasherbs.com/mustard&...FSgRGgodbG0Z1A

Is mustard oil safe to use in cooking?

Our bottle says for massage use only, but the food store proprietor insists that she has been cooking with this very same oil, always labeled for massage only, all her life. What's going on? Indeed, we have just finished our first bottle and only just now noticed that it is labeled for massage only. We two too are still alive.

Help.

LOL. I really havent the foggiest, but for all I know it's widely used for cooking yes.

Could be a matter of production process? I.e., produced for different purposes?

Mustard oil is used often in Bengali cooking - Jyotirmoy and others from Bengal can best address this. It add a wonderful taste to fish curry.

Cheers

We know it's great for cooking - we've just finished our pint bottle of it.

Our concern is, the bottle is marked "For Massage Only." And yet, it is manufactured by KTC (Edibles) Ltd. product of Germany, packed in the UK. Our other bottle a product of the UAE and distributed by an English company -Dabur.

Wasn't there some widespread poisoning from useage of adulterants(i.e not 100% pure mustard oil) argemone oil and/or motor oil some time ago that caused these warnings to be manditory on, most especially, the exported products?

The mustard oil poisoning thing happened in Delhi sometime ago, and that was because loose mustard oil (ie not in manufacturer's sealed containers) was being sold by the litre.. adulterated by unscrupulous sellers.

Normal health issues aside (which I don't know), sealed mustard oil from decent manufacturers was always safe.

And of course I believe most mustard oil is produced by smaller farms from not genetically engineered seed. So if you are the type to believe in such things perhaps Monsanto is leading an international conspiracy?

But yes I've been cooking with the "for massage only" mustard oil for years.

PS: I actually posted before I read the link! Too funny.

Dabur is an Indian Company...!!

We use Mustard all the time in food, its used as a hair oil and also massage oil...

I am not sure why they have marked it "Massage only" maybe something to do the guidelines are per local laws..

The reason for this "for massage only" print can be explained with the amount of erucic acid.

For more info check the famous wikipedia:

Thanks all.

Especially thanks for the link explaining erucic acid - why anyone would want to heat the oil so much as to remove the flavour I don't know.

We will happily continue to cook with our sarson.

Here's what my bottle says [in English and French]:
Dabur Pure Indian Mustard Oil
Distributed by
DABUR
Unit 4 Riverway Ind Park, Newman Lane,
Alton, Hampshire GU34 2QL (U.K.)
Product of UAE

It may be an Indian Company, but mybottle is not from India.

It's good to know so many people are still alive after eating the same massage oil we have been eating.

In India all the people I've seen cooking heated the oil and also the spices very much... I think it is just a different habit.

Yes..oil is heated first and then other spices are added..its is called "Tadka" or "Chhaunk"..

By the way Mustard oil is extensively used in Mango and other pickles...

I am sure some sort of Mustard oil would be available there which would be marked 'Edible'..

However juts have a look at this link

Mustard Oil 250ml

They have mentioned : "Due to Eu Regulations the bottle has to be marked "For External Use Only".

and here is another link...The manager of a Mustard oil company explains and hence lends more clarity to the issue..

Mustard Oil Statement

Hats off to Mr. Paresh Mehta

His excellently-worded statement seems to express his position whilst carefully respecting the law. Wish I could write so well

Thanks ever so much for the link to the Statement regarding use of Mustard Oil By Mr. Paresh Mehta,Manager KTC

We plan to print that out and take it to the tiny Indian market where we bought our bottle of KTC Mustard Oil. I think the owner will be tickled that we did this research [along with the help of our IM friends - thanks!] and found a wonderfully clear answer to our question.

"the fingers stink like anything..."
Stinking, like beauty, is in the nose of the beholder. We happen to like the smell and taste of sarson.
