Rasa in Stoke Newington is good, and there is a v good one in Croydon, forgot the name (and name of street) though, if you're around that area...

SHREE KRISHNA in Tooting SW17... Almost imposible to beat for authentic Keralan food, and great value..

Avoid Brick Lane if you're looking for anyting special, and certainly not South Indian..

Central, fabulous food, and not too expensive: Chowki, 2-3 Denman St. (off Shaftesbury Avenue, nr. Piccadilly Circus).

They have a different menu every month, showcasing the cuisine of three different regions of India at a time.

Absolutely packed Friday and Saturday night, much quieter for lunch, but great at all times.

I also second Chowki and Shree Krishna......

If you want an upmarket Indian restaurant with a slightly different menu ...try Chowki's sister ....Mela on Shaftesbury Ave. you will need to book in advance.

At the top of the Killburn High Road where the name changes to Shoot-Up-Hill there are three or for which are pretty good and pretty cheap. These were my regulars when I lived right there.

For more upscale, in Bayswater just off Queensway, I forget the street but it's just around the corner from the big Whitely's mall, there is Khan's which is great, and a couple doors down is Standard, also excellent.

There are a few good places and dhaba style as well in Southall. My favorite is the Punjabee. Mmmm...

Just bringing back an old thread.

Anyone have any updates?

What is your favourite 'Indian' restaurant in your home town?

Not actually my home town (but not too far away), Newcastle-upon-Tyne has an outpost of Rasa (Das Sreedharan's restaurant chain - discussed in other threads), which is excellent... http://www.rasarestaurants.com

Nearer to home, there is another fine restaurant - also Indian, but expensive. It's called The Valley (after Tyne Valley) and is actually the old station house at Corbridge (around 30 minutes by train from Newcastle). One of its novelties, for people travelling from Newcastle (on certain trains only) is being greeted on the train by a smartly turbanned waiter, who will serve drinks to the diners and take their orders (which he phones through to the restaurant). The food is really superb, but like I said above - not cheap!

A restaurant in the centre of Newcastle used to give the meal free to anyone who could finish their (extra hot) phall, a great gimmick that made the restaurant popular, however, I never tried it, a friend said it was a 'add chilly powder at the last minute' kind of restaurant, and I just don't like those restaurants.

Is Corbridge on the NCL-Carlisle line?

Sounds like a great idea.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned the following in this thread already...

Close to Southall train station in west London, there is a pub called The Glassy Junction (sp.), it is a Punjabi pub and has a mixture of Punjabis from both sides of the divide, there used to be a great atmosphere in the place (I've not visited for about a year), the place serves fantastic food at a reasonable price, they also have a function room and have Punjabi bands playing on some nights.

It's a great place to watch the cricket when India is playing, especially if they are playing Pakistan.

A few years ago I heard about a pub in East London, it was a Bollywood theme pub (and restaurant), does anyone know the name or location of this place? has anyone tried it?

I heard it was near Manor Park/Ilford.

Me neither! But I have eaten in there. It's the Curry Capital restaurant (used to be called the Rupali) in Bigg Market - often publicised in Viz (the adult comic). Viz refer to the proprietor - Abdul Latif - as the Lord of Harpole. The famed phall of which you speak is called the Curry Hell. I have not know anyone who has completed this challenge (but know a few who tried!).

Yes - I live in Hexham (one stop further from Newcastle), but sadly, the travelling waiter is only on trains from Newcastle.

That sounds great, too.

This got me intrigued. First, I found a place further west ... http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/clubs_bars/venue-2621.php

Then I found reference to a bar in Ilford! Ain't the internet marvelous?

Bollywood Bar,

We live in a foodie paradise. More restaurants, breweries, and strangely strip clubs per capita than any other city in the US.

The added bonus is that with so much competition food prices are very reasonable.

One of the more interesting restaurants is Vindalho, serving Goan fusion cuisine. Not at all Indian home cooking but a thoughtful, contemporary meditation on Indian flavor.

With that I had a tender piece of chicken tikka with a yoghurt/mint sauce, mixed pickles, and a delicious thick mango lassi. It came to about AUD$12. You can have a lovely chicken curry and rice for AUD$6 there.

I recommend the Maya Indian Restaurant in Surrey Hills, Sydney for masala dosa. Their prices are cheap too, great Indian food and sweets.
I second the Maya - we go there all the time.. it did go through a very dodgy phase when it changed hands, but is now good again, and they play those lurid hindi bollywood music clips with half dressed women and overacting men in bizarre locations.
