The Great Indian food Where You Live Thread
In Toronto, Gerard St. is incredible . . . my cousins took me there during Divali -- how neat! Buy frozen kulfi on the street, music is blasting . . . We had chat papri at Mothi Mahan -- sooooo good! The kebab and bhel puri was not bad either, but the chat papri -- to die for!
In Houston, if you're in West U, try Thai Smile (i think that's the name of it) -- they have a buffet at lunch that is incredible -- ok so, it's Thai food . . . it's still delicious. The new fancy indian restaurant (whadaheck is it's name???) in West U is not so hot and very pricy.
In Louisville, Shalimar is pretty good -- not super fantastic -- but not bad, and for $6US for a buffet lunch -- it's good value.

Sydney
Some of the better places in Sydney, Australia that serve up great food in good quanitites IMHO... in no particular order:
- Maya Chaat House in Cleveland STreet, Surry Hiulls - thalis, and even bhel puris and various chaat on weekends. Never as good as in India but hard to beat in SYdney. Thalis $12, and the rest somewhere between $2-$12. Also a great slection of sweets.
- Sagar South Indian Restaurant - still the best South India thali in Sydney, directly opposite Maya on clevelanbd street.. also good laddoos.
- Taj Restaurant on Wigram Street in Harris Park (near Parramatta) - a favourite hangout of western sydney desis... greasy as hell and I get an upset stomach every time I go there.
- Woodlands restaurant in liverpool - wonderful veg and non veg fare, pricey but very, very good. They also have a new branch in Parramatta that does $10 unlimited lunches on weekdays, complete with sambar, dhal, a plethora of veges..
- Faheem's Fast Food on Enmore Rd, Enmore. This guy does the BEST tandoori chicken in Sydney, great for spicy as hell curry house style food. Very popular with locals and pakistani taxi drivers, cheap as chips.

actually panchavati also has 2 gujrati veg thali section and is more famous for that i believe(i like the front one with pure ghee!!)..specially on sunday with "puran poli" and "dahi vaadas" !! i love it !!! (aropund 1.5 euros i think)its also a decent place to stay though quite full they also have branches in bombay and pune and 2 other snall towns of which in sinnar they have a nice hotel along with delicious thali 30km from nashik and en route to shirdi if anyones interested
then in pune..panchavatis veg thali (bhandarkar road..1.5 _2 euros)
then theres one building with 3 great restaurants!! its city point on dhole point road. it boasts of 3 best restaurants in pune foodwise.
MAINLAND CHINA (chinese ofcourse!!) _ weekend buffets 5 euros real sumptuos one plus all beer u can drink!!)
n theres also an indian restaurant BOMBAY BRAISSERIE there ..serving the best and most authentic kababs u have ever eaten !!
and the 3rd is an authentic italian restaurant!! if u dont care about much about food and dont mind slow service..then GARDEN COURT in summer nights is really good (chandni chowk) where you can have a birds view of pune by night along their poolside restaurant!!! (2 ppl dinner around 8 euros) and for
south indian snacks ..VAISHALI at fergusson road is absolute must!! every self respecting collegian has to bunk lectures to hangout there once if not regularly!!! amazing snacks!! each plate around 50 cents!
in bombay where some of you will be!!
for veg thali..panchavati GAUVRAV (opposite some big hospital..bombay hospital believe) n SAMRAT (near eros,VT station) (both around 2.5 euros per person ) but do try BALWAAS (near churchgate, next to american centre USEFI and on the other side another big hospital_lol) its amazing...u would be having all homeless people around..n u enter it n its really plush but more importantly amazing food take any dish !!i love prawns n butter chicken there..n very reasonable by bombay standards!! 2 ppl around 6 euros. otherwise you can also try the restaurant inside nehru planetorium its buffet (indian ,continental) is really good though expensive at 6 euros per person!
eating "pav bhaji" is absolute must in bombay ,pune as its a speciality found only here !!its around 50 cents n enough for a dinner!! you will find it in any snacks restaurant ask them less spicy or jain pav bhaji(without spices!!) if u want mild taste!! also "pani puri" ,"bhel puri" and "sev puri" (price..u can have all 3 for less tnan 1 euro but select a place with proper hygiene for these 3 even if a bit costly !! and in deserts "falooda" or "kulfi" !!! (in pune best kulfi is at "shivkailash" opposite pune railway station and in bombay i still like at chowpatty though its lost its glitter coz of stupid govt laws!!
small tip..if u r strolling around VT or Fort area in bombay u come across many fruit juice carts where they make fresh juice in front of you by hand!!! you hav to hav it ..its so refreshing n dirt cheap!! 1 euro gives 6 big glasses!! just ask them to wash the glasses in front of you 2 times though
so njoy!! !!sorry if i mixed a lot of info but foods among my fav topics n its difficult just to pick one restaurant!!
p.s: 1 euro = (approx) 1.2 USD

Yes, maverick, you are right about the Gujarati Thalis with puran polis on Sunday !! This restaurant is called "Dhaba", if I remember correctly. One has to book in advance to find a table on Sundays!!Hotel Panchavati's other small town hotel is at Sangamner, 45 kms. from Sinnar on the Nashik-Pune highway.
Whoever said money can't buy happiness didn't know where to shop !
I have recommendations for:
Cincinnati, OH - Udipi Cafe. Superb South Indian vegetarian food. Also serve a North Indian menu, but haven't tried it. Love their dhai vada and rava masala dosai. Ras Malai is great too...
Orange County, CA - Bukhara in Huntington Beach area, close to 405/Beach. Very low key family restaurant serving Panjabi fare. Since it's hardly in a high end location - it is mostly frequented by the local regulars. But, best north indian food outside of India, IMHO.

The Jewel in the Crown on (not surprisingly) Crown Street.
Lovely Bengali family, splendid nosh.
You need a pretty good reason to come to this cold, grey city in winter, the food and hospitality here will warm you up

not exactly hometown but two recent indian eating experiences in remote parts of the world:
Himalaya Restaurant
25 Kreschatik Street, Kiev, Ukraine
(that was a week before the elections
there may be no restaurant or Kreschatik St in Kiev now
)
passable Indian food, or great - for Ukraine, Indian chef, London East End prices, clientele 50% Ukrainian 50% expat, below average decor but view on Kreschatik (the principal street of Kiev)
Gandhara Restaurant
Рочдельская ул., 15, стр. 7
(Rochdelskaya Street, 15, metro "Ulitsa 1905 goda"
Moscow, Russia
actually have a Pakistani chef but the cuisine is mixed Indian/Pakistani
a bit pricey but decor is over the top - called "restaurant-museum" and they have a Pakistani branch each Sunday
the cooking is GREAT and service is to match

For those who find themselves at Singapore Airport (Changi) you can get a very nice Dosa. Not sure what the Restaurant's name was but you need to go up one level from the main shopping/duty free area.Yum,and so much better than most other airport fare.
Punjabi food Toronto
One of my favourite in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. is Brar Sweets it's on Dixie Road North of Derry Road, south of Steeles Avenue. It's all vegetarian, buffet with about 50 different items, North India, with some Chinese dishes. I know what some people think of Buffet food but this one is very good, and the waiting time on weekends is about 1-2 hours. Price is about less than $12.00 Cad.
Sego
Sego
Not my hometown, but recently had dinner at "Kathmandu" in Buenos Aires. Food was good, but I might have been biased since I hadn't been to an Indian restaurant for the last 3 months or so. Address is Cordoba 3547. They are open only for dinner Mon-Sat.
Halal Restaurant
They claim to be East London's oldest Indian restaurant, established 1939.
When I worked in the City, this was the favourite.
Found a link http://www.currypages.com/detail.aspx?restid=3958
Went there a few weeks back and it's still great. My favourites are Ginger Chicken, Meat Bhuna and Tarka Dhal.

forgot to mention, you get a free samosa and their made up spicey mango chutney is lovely
